GENERAL DESCRIPTION

UTILITY DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position description is a general description for Utility Technician I – III, depending on certificates, experience, and qualifications. The Public Works and Utility Director will determine the position and starting salary. Employee performs skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in connection with the maintenance of the water delivery system and wastewater collection system. Must be flexible on schedule. All department employees are required to be on-call. Reports directly to the Utility Team Leader, Utility Operations Supervisor, Public Works and Utility Director, and/or Operations Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Performs tasks under the direct supervision of the Utility supervisor staff

· Install meters and R.P.Z.’s, read meters, perform work as required to repair and maintain water/sewer mains, obtain lift-station reads, work on storm drain installs, and be on-call for utility department call-out service problems.

· Responsible for lift station maintenance, including replacing pumps, parts, etc.

· May require work on a computer for utility billing, work orders, and training

· Special Requirement – This position is considered to be “essential personnel”. It is required to report to duty for any and all emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, sinkholes, water/sewer breaks, and other crises to ensure public safety.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to comprehend and follow instructions. Performs related work and special projects as requested. Skilled in the use of hand tools and light-duty equipment. Perform manual labor duties outdoors and occasionally in adverse conditions. Knowledge of methods and tools used to effectively perform job duties. Ability to read and comprehend manuals, reports, and memorandums is required for the performance of duties. Operate light-duty equipment as necessary to perform various tasks. Ability to convey essential information written and orally. Basic computer skills required.

PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Able to lift to 50 lbs. unassisted. Ability to climb, bend, stoop, squat, and walk for long periods of time.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Must possess a high school diploma or acceptable equivalency. Should have a minimum of one (1) to five (5) years of utility/water/sewer experience. (TECHNICIAN PLACEMENT WILL DEPEND ON EDUCATION EXPERIENCE)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record, which is acceptable by most automobile insurance companies. R.P.Z. Backflow Tester License / R.P.Z. Backflow Repair Certification / Water Distribution Two (2) License / Waste Water Collection Certificate / Confined Spaces Certificate. OSHA Thirty (30) safety training courses or similar course training that provides certification of completion. Any additional related certification is also accepted (TECHNICIAN PLACEMENT WILL DEPEND ON CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE)

JOB LOCATION: Utility Department, 6333 Ridge Road

HIRING RATE:* Depends on Qualifications and Experience* – Range $15.00 - $24.50

CLOSING DATE: Until Filled

BENEFITS:

The benefits package includes 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and life insurance; vacation (first year – two weeks); sick (first year – two weeks); personal time (three days annually); ten (10) paid holidays (annually), and part of the Florida Retirement System (F.R.S.) program. The City also has a deferred compensation program and access to additional insurance (i.e., Aflac)

Applicants must have all licenses, certificates, and have a maximum of seven (7) years of experience in this classification to be considered for the higher amount of salary range. The final determination will be made by the Public Works and Utility Director.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 - $24.50 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
