The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and can work alone and as part of a team. The primary role for this position is to operate equipment safely and efficiently to complete landscape maintenance and turf maintenance tasks within the Destination Parks division. This team is composed of four parks, including Dix Park, Pullen Park, John Chavis Memorial Park, and the Raleigh Rose Garden.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently operates a variety of equipment requiring moderate manipulative skill by performing the following duties
- Operate a range of grounds maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, bobcats, backhoes and all other equipment related to grounds maintenance and improvements
- Perform general repair and maintenance of various small area parks within the City of Raleigh, including litter pickup, mowing, mulching, leaf removal, pruning, planting and other miscellaneous duties
- Participates in equipment maintenance including changing and sharpening blades, checking oil, cleaning air filters, greasing, small mower repairs, etc
- Participates in preparing and grading terrain, seeding and sodding lawns, prepping and planting of flowerbeds, trees, shrubs and perennials
- Operates automotive equipment in transporting personnel and equipment to and from work sites or set destinations
- Inspects assigned equipment for mechanical readiness and safety. Operates moderately complex equipment on a relief, training or occasional basis
- Assists City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations
- Greases, oils and performs minor repairs on equipment
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience in grounds maintenance, landscape and/or parks industry sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in performing tasks related to grounds maintenance
- Plants new and repairs established lawns using sod, seed mixtures and fertilizers
- Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
- Basic mathematical concepts
- Basic filing and record-keeping principles
- This position may be required to perform special tasks during emergency and disaster events
- Proficient in computers and data entry into smartphone applications
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary WorkHeavy work – Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilations, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger or a threatening environment) and frequent exposure to intense noise.
Working hours are from 7 AM - 3:30 PM year-round. Weekend and holiday assistance will be requested on an as needed basis to support programs and special events.
