The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

#1: Swim Lesson Program Development
  • Lead the design, structure, and execution of swim lesson programs for various skill levels and age groups. (children, adults, and special needs)
  • Implement a curriculum that aligns with best practice, enhances participant engagement and safety. Ensure proper ratios and emergency response protocols are met.
  • Establish a structured lesson plan for progressive skill development.
#2 Instructor Development
  • Supervise swim lesson instructors, ensure they’re trained, motivated and delivering high quality lessons.
  • Conduct on going assessments of teaching effectiveness, providing constructive feedback and professional development
  • Continued education – monthly or quarterly in-service trainings for instructors
  • Direct reports – complete performance evaluations and disciplinary action as needed. 
#3 Program Management & Customer Engagement
  • Oversee scheduling, enrollment, and coordination of swim lessons to ensure smooth operation.
    • Coordinate scheduling with Elementary School swim program
  • Monitor program effectiveness through regular participant and instructor feedback, adjusting as needed.
  • Purchasing supplies and equipment for swim lessons.
  • Maintain open communication with participants and parents, addressing questions and concerns.
  • Promote the swim lesson program – engaging community to increase enrollment.
  • Oversee aquatic programming including, water fitness classes, homeschool swim class, and any new programming.

Requires an associate's degree in Recreation or related field supplemented experience listed below; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Lifeguard certification (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid).
  • Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification. 
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Swim Instructor Trainer certification is required.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification for pool maintenance responsibilities or ability to obtain within in 6-month period.
  • Aquatics Supervisor Certification or ability to obtain within in 6-month period.

Experience
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in aquatics, including lifeguarding, swim instruction, or aquatics programming.
  • At least 2-3 years of direct experience overseeing and developing swim lesson programs, including:
    • Designing and implementing swim lesson curriculums.
    • Training, scheduling, and supervising swim instructors.
    • Evaluating and updating instructional methods to meet the needs of various skill levels and age groups.
  • Experience managing a team, including hiring, mentoring, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement program policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Experience in assessing community needs and expanding program offerings based on participant feedback.

Skills
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to motivate and manage staff effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills for program scheduling, staff management, and participant registration processes.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices in swim instruction and aquatic safety.
  • Familiarity with aquatic programming software or participant registration systems is a plus.
  • Strong customer service skills to engage with participants, parents, and the community.

Mathematics:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients and other employees of the organization

Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in writing, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Works in an office and indoor/outdoor aquatics atmosphere with potential exposure to heavy chemical presence. The Aquatics Supervisor may be exposed to heat, cold, and temperature swings.
