Motor Equipment Operator I - Water Maintenance (FT)Public Utilities Department Salary Range: $17.75 - $29.28 Hourly $36,920.00 - $60,902.40 AnnuallyFLSA Position Class: Non-ExemptWork Schedule: Monday - FridayClosing Date: Open Until FilledJob OverviewResponsible for the safe and efficient operation of motorized equipment and for performing manual duties and preventative maintenance tasks within the water and sewer department.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization. Operates vehicles and equipment such as a bush hog, backhoe, and other equipment.Operates vehicles and/or equipment to transport materials, tools, and personnel to sewer and water construction sites.Performs maintenance and repair of water and sewer mains, services, valves, manholes, and hydrants.Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials, and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy.Installs sanitary sewer lines, lift stations, pumps, manholes, and all related facilities. Assists in excavations and backfill of utility trenches; makes connections for water, sewer, and drainage pipes.Receives requests for emergency and unscheduled work, coordinates the completion of tasks, and responds to complaints.Mows and trims grass, clears debris, and grades land around water and sewer lines.Inspects and makes repairs to the city’s creek crossings every six months.Services and makes minor repairs to equipment on a regular basis.Prepares field notes and activity reports.Utilizes electronic locating equipment.Provides backup assistance to another crew when needed.Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of the practices of operating and servicing trucks and water/sewer line construction equipment.Working knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to operate equipment.Working knowledge of various chemicals used in water and sewer systems in order to maintain the systems property, efficiently, and safely.Working knowledge of excavation, trenching, and confined space entry procedures.Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles, equipment, and tools in this department.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, directions, and traffic signals.Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather conditions.Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.Job Related Physical Activity RequirementsThis position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Working Conditions The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, snow, ice, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, gases, oils, dusts, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, uneven surfaces, and confined spaces. An employee in this position could be “reasonably anticipated” as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with potentially infectious materials. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends, or during emergency situations.
