Come join our team!! Our Summer Camp program starts in June (M-F, shift varies)
Summer Camp orientation/training will be June 9th to June 13th. Summer Camp
officially starts on June 16th to August 1st.

Performs professional activities implementing the summer camp program. Work involves administrative and programmatic aspects ensuring a safe camp environment, developing recreational, creative, and character development activities, and guiding and supporting camp instructors and leaders.

Position typically supervises employees and schedules day-to-day work activities to provide optimum efficiency and productivity. Position requires a general understanding of the assigned function or business area. Reports to Parks and Recreation Site Supervisor or designee.

Essential Job Functions

Staff may also perform other duties as assigned.

Plans and leads indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts and skill development activities for the city’s summer camp; develops lesson plans spanning a variety of age groups for each activity and/or session.

Provides a safe and joyful environment for children; teaches human relations skills and concepts; ensures camper follow all established rules and codes of conduct.

Assures the physical well-being of children participating in programs; monitors the health and safety of campers, administering first aid for minor injuries as necessary; communicates with caregivers regarding campers’ accomplishments and behavior.

Plans and/or coordinates off site day trips and participates as a chaperone to such, as assigned.

Opens and closes designated facilities, as assigned and per all established policies and procedures.

Maintains clean and orderly play and supply storage areas; distributes lunches/snacks as appropriate; aids in the supervision of drop-off and pick-up according to group schedule.

Creates informational posters and fliers and decorations for classrooms.

Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of reports, records, and data for routine and requested purposes.

Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.

Maintains quality communication and interaction with all city personnel, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive city image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to, or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event, or other emergency to meet the city’s obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures and meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.

Assesses and monitors workload; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.

Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff; provides or coordinates staff training; works with staff to correct deficiencies; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires high school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of planning programs and/or activities for a recreation department, after school program, or summer camp, including one (6) months in a supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.

Required Certifications and Licenses
May be required to possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.

First Aid and CPR training are required as part of the City of Tamarac’s new hire onboarding for this position.

An eligible veteran or spouse of veteran shall receive preference in the selection process as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran’s preference, a candidate MUST submit a copy of a DD-214, Certificate of Discharge, or Statement of Eligibility with their application.
