General Statement of Job
This position is intended to be an entry into the organization and to learn the operation of a Water Treatment Plant. Work involves preparing for the Class “C” Level Certification required for employment as a Water Plant Operator “C”.
After orientation and training, performs routine technical activities associated with a Water Plant Operator “C”, including monitoring and operating water plant machinery and equipment to provide efficient and safe provision of water to City residents. Reports to Water Treatment Plant Lead Operators or designee.
Essential Job Functions
Participates in the operation of a Water Treatment Plant; monitors working condition of all water plant electrical and mechanical machinery and system equipment.
Adjusts and performs routine maintenance and recommends repairs as necessary; assists mechanics in the repair of equipment.
Checks and records to all applicable records and logs, water flow, pressure, levels, and quality.
Monitors, adjusts, and operates chemical feed equipment to ensure proper levels of chemical additives.
Loads and unloads chemicals by hand or using lifting equipment.
Maintains proper water pressure and water storage levels.
Collects water samples and performs routine laboratory tests for turbidity, color, chlorine content and other parameters as required by regulatory agencies.
Performs routine activities to support operations, including cleaning equipment and rooms, receiving deliveries, collecting field samples, painting equipment, and performing inventory activities.
Patrols property for security purposes.
Receives, reviews, prepares, and/or submits a variety of documents such as daily reports, customer complaint log, laboratory reports, and operational charts and graphs.
Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, trucks, pumps, motors, generators, small engine equipment, telemetry equipment, copier, mechanics and hand tools, telephone, and two-way radio.
Requires working varying shifts and hours to obtain necessary experience and training.
Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.
Maintains quality communication and interaction with all city personnel, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive city image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event or other emergency to meet the city’s obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by three (3) months of experience in water plant operation or utility system maintenance and operation; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.
Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.
Within eighteen (18) months of hire, must obtain a Public Drinking Water Plant Operator Class “C” License as a condition of continued employment with the City.
