What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant position at City of Tavares?
The Library Assistant performs paraprofessional work related to circulation and library programming for all ages. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assists with maintaining the operation of the circulation desk according to established policies and procedures. Provides circulation services to the public.
2. Cash handling and cash register operation.
3. Performs all circulation duties related to circulation operations including check-ins, check-outs, renewals, holds requests, payment of fines and fees, registration of patrons, shelving, transit, holds list, shelf reading, and maintaining book drop throughout the day.
4. Assists patrons with selecting and locating library materials and library information.
5. Provides reader advisory, technology assistance, and reference assistance to patrons.
6. Answers incoming calls and assists with inquiries or forwards to appropriate staff as needed.
7. Assists with the preparation and implementation of library programs for ages infant to adult.
8. Assists with other library duties and special projects as needed.
9. Utilizes excellent time management skills to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and responsibilities simultaneously.
10. Other duties as assigned.
11. Must be available to work in the event of a disaster to assist with recovery response efforts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to provide excellent customer service when working with staff and library patrons.
2. Ability to work with the public in a library setting.
3. Knowledge of library computer systems and current technology trends.
4. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and library patrons in person and over the telephone.
5. Ability to perform basic mathematical and literacy functions.
6. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
7. Ability to operate a cash register.
8. Ability to perform clerical and manual tasks as prescribed by standard operating procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
9. Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Two (2) years of customer service experience working with the public in a library setting.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
· Valid Florida driver’s license
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
- Sufficient eyesight (with or without correction) to perform essential functions
- Sufficient hearing (with or without hearing aid) to perform essential functions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Required light work that involves walking and standing most of the day.
- Ability and dexterity to accurately enter, access, and retrieve information from a computer
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Pay: $16.20 per hour
