What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Control Specialist I - Traffic Operations position at City of Topeka?
The City of Topeka is seeking hard-working individuals to serve as Traffic Control Specialists in the Traffic Operations division. Using a variety of equipment including aerial bucket trucks and hydraulic post drivers, this position installs and maintains City owned street and roadway signage, ensuring compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. This includes fabricating signs using a computer-aided sign making system and operating a bed-mounted and walk-behind street striping machine and paint sprayer for the installation/painting of street, crosswalk and other pavement markings.
This position requires heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, and standing long periods of time to perform the required job duties. Will require the ability to work a night shift during the crosswalk painting season and may be required to participate/assist in emergency snow removal operations.
Minimum qualifications:
- High School graduation or equivalent required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas drivers license and city insurable driving record.
- IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification and forklift safety certification required within one (1) year of successfully completing the initial hire probationary period.
- Demonstrated experience with the operation of hand tools used in the construction or mechanical trades is required.
- Demonstrated experience with the maintenance of vehicles is required.
- One (1) year direct experience installing traffic signs and roadway markings is desired.
- Experience with the fabrication of highway and street signs to federal, state and local (MUTCD) standards is desired.
Entry rate of pay: $18.70 - $19.75 depending on qualifications
