Job Title: Central Sterile Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Central Sterile Technician is responsible for the performance of duties in the technical areas of decontamination and preparation, packaging, and sterilization of medical instrumentation and supplies. They are also responsible for instrument maintenance and equipment decontamination.

Essential Functions

Understands theory of asepsis and complies with universal precautions.

Responsible for decontamination, rinsing, and lubrication of surgical instrumentation using the following equipment:

-Ultra sonic cleaner - following recommended guidelines.

-Washer decontaminator - following recommended guidelines

Responsible for checking, assembling, and packaging of all instruments to be sterilized, following recommendations.

Responsible for sterilization of all items, and operating steam and ETO gas sterilizers, following recommended guidelines. Monitors and documents the sterilization processes, following recommended guidelines.

Cleans, disinfects, and stores patient equipment according to policy and procedure.

Processes instruments from hospital departments, clinics, and physician offices, and oversees distribution of these items.

Orders and processes sterile linen packs for all hospital departments as necessary.

Maintains accurate counts of all Operating Room instrument trays.

Maintains departmental inventory.

Assists nurse manager with policy revisions and yearly competencies.

Provides education for Central Services and OR personnel for processing new instruments and performing new procedures.

Provides a safe environment by maintaining own physical health and mental alertness and utilizes measures to prevent infection. Notifies department supervisor of any possible safety concern. Manages and operates equipment safely and efficiently.

Keeps current with decontamination/sterilization recommendations and Central Service issues through continuing education.

Completes yearly Healthstream requirements.

Agrees to comply with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, rules, regulations, and standards of conduct relating to the position and has a duty to report any suspected violations of the law or the standards of conduct to his or her immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications

High school diploma, graduate of an accredited Central Supply Technician Program and certification with IAHCSMM. Holds current CPR card. Must have computer skills, appropriate knowledge of specialized equipment and supplies, and be physically able to meet the demands of an active position, including extensive walking, standing, and lifting.

Working Conditions

OSHA Category I (inherent risk -- highest risk category). Exposure to ethylene oxide sterilizer and contaminated supplies and equipment. Frequent heavy lifting.
