A well-known nonprofit is seeking a Temporary Accounting Associate to join its accounting and reporting team. This position is expected to start in February 2025 and last through October 2025. The successful candidate will support the full accounting cycle and related reporting functions, contributing to the financial integrity of the organization.
Location: New York, NY (Flatiron area)
Schedule: Hybrid, 4 days in office 1 day remote
Compensation: $36/hr - $42/hr
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and analyze general ledger records, prepare and post routine journal entries, and support the monthly close process.
- Reconcile month-end bank accounts and balance sheet accounts, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other asset and liability accounts.
- Record and reconcile monthly grant commitments and payable balances.
- Import data from source systems into the accounting system and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist in preparing financial statements, schedules, and analyses for monthly and annual reporting.
- Compile team reports into presentation materials for internal and external use.
- Organize and maintain accounting files and ensure proper documentation.
- Provide support during audits and tax preparation processes, and assist in responding to external accountant and auditor requests.
- Help maintain the organization's chart of accounts and set up new account strings as needed.
- Respond to ad-hoc accounting requests and take on special projects.
- Assist with process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
- Coordinate follow-ups with other teams as necessary and manage ongoing workflow tasks.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred. Other relevant degrees will be considered based on experience.
- Experience: 2-4 years of experience in public accounting or a similar industry.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and applicable industry standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics GP, FloQast, or Concur is a plus.
- Knowledge of business intelligence tools like Tableau or Power BI is beneficial.
- Familiarity with IRS regulations for exempt organizations (private foundations) is a plus.
