The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Advising and Student Success, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing academic management and academic success services to MBA students. The Assistant Director also works directly to manage projects with the Academics Team, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), and conducts special projects as needed. The Office of Student Affairs is composed of four teams that work collaboratively to enhance the student experience: Academic Advising and Student Success, Student Life and Engagement, Programs and Events, and Operations and Student Services.

The Office of Student Affairs at Columbia Business School (CBS) supports the academic and community experience for MBA, Executive MBA and MS students by creating an inclusive environment in which all students feel a sense of belonging, agency and partnership in cocreating their optimal student experience.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising

  • Partners with the Associate Director of Academic Advising and Student Success and the larger MBA Academic Advising Team to ensure an effective academic advising program for over 2000 MBA and dual degree students. Provides counseling and advisement regarding academic performance, course selection, registration, and degree requirements. Refers students to resources tailored to individual needs, using independent judgment and strategic thinking.
  • Serves as the academic advisor for the MBAxMS dual degree program between CBS and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Partner with colleagues at SEAS to design programming to support this community and maintain processes and procedures between the two schools.
  • Serves as the academic advisor for the Knight-Bagehot Fellows, a program between CBS and the School of Journalism. Partners with the School of Journalism to provide resources and guidance for this specialized group of dual students.

Student Support and Accessibility

  • Implements academic accommodations in accordance with the Title IX Office and Office of Disability Services. Facilitates communication between students, relevant offices, and faculty.

Program and Events Management

  • Oversees the Case Competition Grant including awarding student teams funding to participate in Case Competitions. Responsible for coordinating with participating students and overseeing their reimbursement process with the Financial Planning Office.
  • Serves as the team lead for Wellness Programming. Oversees all pre and post events management details for workshops and events. Provides post event reporting to senior leadership including opportunities for improvement.

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Attends academic orientation sessions to provide an introduction to academic services. Participates in information sessions and tabling for current and prospective students. Evenings, weekends and early morning hours are sometimes required.
  • Develops and maintains strong partnerships with Admissions, Centers and Programs, Career Management, and the Samberg Institute for Teaching Excellence to share information on student trends and program changes that could impact student advisement and academic success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. 2-4 years of experience required, preferably in higher education advising or administration.
  • Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills, fluency in Microsoft Office and absolute attention to detail is required. Candidate must be proactive and have excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and projects in a high-volume service-oriented environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also necessary. The ability to exercise discretion and judgment in confidential matters is required. The candidate must be a proven team player, able to work cooperatively in small groups or independently with minimal supervision required; demonstrates ability to build and establish relationships with a diverse student body, faculty, and administrators. Openness to feedback while maintaining a growth, learning, and change-positive mindset is a must. Evenings, weekends and early morning hours are sometimes required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree desired. Background in Counseling, Advisement, Higher Education Administration, and/or MBA programs strongly preferred. Knowledge of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.
