What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mortgage Loan Underwriter position at COMMUNITY FIRST CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA?
Role:
Underwrite and decision first and second mortgage loans according to investor and organizational guidelines. Review, interpret and implement investor and regulatory compliance changes as determined by state and federal guidelines.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Examine loan application and supporting documentation to perform credit and collateral underwriting analysis and make appropriate decisions regarding credit granting based on guidelines set by investor and guidelines established internally. Document loan files with decision and issue appropriate notification to loan officer.
- Communicate both in writing and verbally any new investor guideline or regulatory changes as they occur.
- Maintain compliance within the department by reviewing regulatory changes and determining how these will affect our processes and procedures. Implement these changes as they apply. Review monthly quality control reports and prepare response.
- Communicate error and trends to staff so these are not repeated.
- Maintain daily log of files underwritten. In addition, prepare a monthly underwriting report outlining results of overall file reviews such as credit quality and documentation issues.
- Participate in other projects and/or assignments as necessary.
- Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Knowledge and Skills
EXPERIENCE: Three to five years’ experience related to conventional, government, conforming/non-conforming and equity loans underwriting, including preparatory experience.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
- A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school equivalent to approximately 64 credit hours.
- Direct Endorsement (DE) Certification required.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
A significant level of trust, credibility and diplomacy is required. In-depth dialogues, conversations and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reports and outside vendors can be of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature. Communications may involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
MENTAL AND/OR EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence.
