Animal Care Technician - Muttopia
Muttopia, Compassion Without Borders' shelter based in Santa Rosa CA, is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic and positive person to join our team as an Animal Care Technician.

POSITION TYPE: Part-time, non-exempt
POSITION SALARY: $18 to $19 per hour, depending on experience.
Role Overview: Reporting directly to the Operations Director, the Animal Care Technician (ACT) ensures the optimal care and attention for all sheltered animals at Muttopia. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including animal care, housing maintenance, cleaning, feeding, medicating, exercising, occasional grooming, enriching their environment, and maintaining accurate records. The ACT also contributes to upholding a clean, sanitary shelter environment, as well as assisting the public and volunteers as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Thoroughly clean and sanitize animal housing areas, cages, and runs to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
- Provide nourishment and fresh drinking water to all shelter animals, observing their appetites and food preferences and promptly reporting any concerns to medical staff and supervisors.
- Engage in janitorial tasks such as mopping floors, laundry duties, dishwashing, and light maintenance.
- Properly store, unload, and restock equipment, supplies, and feed.
- Monitor the daily health, safety, behavior, and appearance of shelter animals, promptly reporting any issues that require behavioral, training, or medical attention.
- Administer prescribed medications and supplements as directed by medical staff.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records as necessary.
- Offer specialized care, including walking dogs, socializing, providing enrichment, co-housing, and caring for isolated animals.
- Maintain a consistently professional, courteous, and tactful demeanor with colleagues and the public.
- Participate in scheduled classes by the Behavior and Training Department and Shelter Medicine, as required.
- Actively support and advocate for the mission and goals of Compassion Without Borders.
- Fulfill all assigned duties effectively.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to prioritize based on need.
- Display self-motivation, responsibility, strong interpersonal skills, and multitasking capabilities in a fast-paced setting.
- Knowledge of domestic animal breeds, diseases, health care, basic animal behavior, and body language.
- Proficient oral and written communication skills.
- Skill in delegation when necessary.
Qualifications:
- Preferred: Six months of related animal care experience.
- Proficiency in humane animal handling, restraint, and confinement.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Availability to cover for sick leave or planned vacations as required.
- Commitment to a year-long tenure as an Animal Care Technician at Compassion Without Borders.
