What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief Medical Officer position at CompDrug?

CompDrug is seeking a Chief Medical Officer, who is a member of the strategic team responsible for agency-wide medical policy, managing medical operations, ensuring high-quality patient care, and driving effective, efficient and innovative practices.   

Primarily an administrative position, but may occasionally provide direct service pursuant to licensure, including direct and general supervision.   


Work Arrangements: 
Essential Staff 
60% On-site/40% Remote 
Reports to: CEO   

Essential Functions 
  • Ensure that all medical policies and practices are in compliance with current federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding the medical treatment of opiate addiction or otherwise applicable to services that CompDrug provides as a Community Behavioral Health Provider, including but not limited to: 
    • Ohio Administrative Code chapter 5122-40  
    • Ohio Administrative Code chapter 4729:5-21 
    • 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 2 and Part 8 
    • Controlled Substances Act 
    • CARF Accreditation Standards 
    • Contractual and other funding requirements 
  • Oversee medication inventory, reconciliation, administration and dispensing. 
  • Supervise and evaluate site specific Medical Department staff, including supervision of the Site Specific Medical Director, Director of Nursing and provider staff to assure a consistent, compliant, dignified and respectful milieu. 
  • Assuring efficient and effective medical services and practices through cost management, resource management including time and building, utilization, peer review, quality assurance, and medical protocol development. 
  • Recruit, train and develop resources to assist medical department staff. 
  • Train new staff and support their continuing education. 
  • Coordinate and manage placement of internship, rotation, residency and fellowship opportunities for students, including maintaining relationships with educational institutions hospital systems and fellowship programs regarding placement and course requirements. 
  • Monitor quality and appropriateness of medical care and documentation, including oversight of medical peer review. 
  • Attend or chair internal agency meetings as necessary, including Medical Peer Review, Interdisciplinary Review Committee, Medical staff meetings, and Quality Improvement meetings. 
  • Attend external meetings and represent CompDrug in the community, to Medical organizations, funders, and governing agencies at the regional and state level. 
  • Provide education on medical practice internally and externally as necessary. 
  • Ensure materials that are produced or used by CompDrug for any purpose are medically sound, factual and accurate for current practice. 
  • Communicate effectively to build teams, trust, knowledge and understanding inter-departmentally, intra-departmentally and externally. 
  • Ensure the agency remains current on best practices and current developments in behavioral healthcare specific to services provided by and opportunities for the agency. 
  • Provide outreach, advocacy, and education on the agency and best practices in the field. 
  • Attend and provide CMO report to Board of Trustees in addition to medical opinions to the CEO and Board of Directors as requested. 
  • Participate in strategic planning to identify, develop, and expand existing or create new programs and services and contribute to the formulation and evaluation of goals and objectives for the agency. 
  • Officer of the agency and member of the Strategic Leadership Team responsible for leading initiatives, managing budgets, developing strategies, and fostering collaboration across departments to achieve departmental and organizational objectives. 
  • Propose, develop, periodically review, and revise medication protocols, eligibility requirements, and agency policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and management of a departmental/program budget. 
  • Maintain professional licensure and certifications. 
  • Participate in annual FBI BCI process and supports the maintenance of credentials and CAHQ profile. 
Qualifications  
  • Required Experience: 5 years medical practice in behavioral healthcare, preferably in administration, management or senior staff. 
  • Must have and maintain an active license to practice as a provider in the State of Ohio.  
  • Must currently possess and maintain federal narcotics license for controlled substances and be registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and not have previously voluntarily surrendered a controlled substance license or had it revoked. 
  • Must have at least five (5) years of practice as a licensed practitioner; including three (3) years experience treating patients with addictive and mental health disorders. 
  • Preference for candidates seeking or possessing board certification or equivalent specialty in addiction medicine. 
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend large amounts of written material such as journals, reports, and regulations. 
  • Proven ability to effectively manage programs and people. 
  • Must not only be technically sound and proficient in the administrative aspects of the job, but must have excellent human relations skills, with proven ability and willingness to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with staff and patients. 
  • Demonstrated competence in the use and adoption of computers and technology. 
  • Must be flexible and available to address emergency issues/situations as they arise.
  • Must be able to travel, as required, have a valid Ohio Driver’s license with an excellent driving record and full insurance coverage. 
Physical Demands and Work Environment 
Must be able to meet the following physical requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation: 1) Sit, walk, stand, use hands to manipulate, handle, feel, and control items or equipment; 2) Reach with hands and arms; 3) Talk and hear; 4) See and be able to read, write, and interpret text, spreadsheet, and graphical documents; 5) Occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
