Job Description:
Signal Maintainers perform the installation, maintenance, and federally regulated testing of signal apparatus on the railroad. As a signal trainee you will be on the path to becoming a fully trained and qualified signal maintainer. There are other opportunities beyond a Signal Maintainer that include other promoted union and management positions. This is a personally fulfilling and exciting career with excellent long-term benefits. Here are some of the many systems and equipment that fall within the scope of a Signal Maintainer:
- Signal Systems that automatically authorize train movements by use of signals and other technology.
- Switch Machines that automatically operate and detect the position of a railway switch to route trains to different tracks.
- Highway Grade Crossing warning systems that detect approaching trains and warn motorists using flashing lights, gates, and other forms of warning technology.
- Defect Detection systems that automatically detect failures of moving trains and alert railroad personnel to those failures. These defects include dragging equipment, over-height railcars, and overheated railcar bearings.
- Railyard Process Control Systems (PCS) that assist the transportation team in the movement of railcars within railyard.
- Moveable Bridge sensors that ensure a moveable bridge is aligned correctly for the safe passage of trains.
- The signal department is always on the forefront of the implementation of new railway technology.

General Job Requirements:
- Core Requirements - Must understand and/or show an aptitude to learn, how to:
- Perform all required work at a high level of safety.
- Solve electrical and mechanical problems.
- Apply electrical principles.
- Read and apply technical product manuals.
- Read and interpret electrical and mechanical diagrams.
- Work on low and high voltage electrical circuits (not exceeding 480VAC).
- Perform all required work at a high level of safety.
- Install, maintain, and repair electronics.
- Start, stop, monitor operations, and make adjustments to machines.
- Other Requirements – Must be able to:
- Work in varying weather conditions.
- Work in a setting where the focus is on the task.
- Work safely around potentially hazardous materials, machinery, and equipment.
- Wear protective clothing.
- Operate technology such as laptops and tablets.
- Respond to changing work assignments.
- Work non-standard hours or various shifts to support a 24/7 operation.
- Obtain & Maintain CDL (funding available).
- Valuable Skills and Certifications
- Prior Military Experience.
- Already having a Class A CDL.
- Able to effectively excavate using a backhoe and other similar machinery.
- Have a PCS background or similar electrical/electronics background.
- We have successfully hired from trade industries such as electrical, carpentry, telecom, etc., so long as the person shows an aptitude for learning the practical electrical/electronics skills that will be provided training for.
