What are the responsibilities and job description for the CIRCULATION ASSISTANT position at County of Culpeper?
Responsible for providing customer assistance in the operations of the circulation department for the County Library. This position connects with patrons and guides them to the appropriate resources available to the community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Performs tasks at the circulation desk
- Checking library books in and out
- Registering patrons for a borrower’s card/ issuing new cards
- Preparing books to be shelved
- Determines status of loaned materials via computer records/fines owed on overdue or collection agency accounts
- Enters, updates and retrieves data from the library’s information systems
- Answers phones and provides requested information
- Must be flexible, to work rotating schedule which will include days, evenings, and weekends
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of assigned functions including filing, answering phones, etc.
- Performs related duties as required
- Instructs patrons in the use of copiers and other routine library equipment
- Read shelves to keep books and materials in proper order
Education equivalent to a high school diploma. Customer service experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is preferred, but not required.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
Bilingual, preferred but not required.

- Ability to effectively communicate with customers and co-workers
- Ability to provide the highest level of customer service
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to customers
- Ability to operate varied office equipment such as telephones, computer terminals, copiers, etc.
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Knowledge of library services, operations, programs, policies, and procedures
- Must be organized and be able to maintain a neat and clean work environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate. Tasks typically involve some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing kik stools, and crawling. May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20 - 30 pounds). May involve long periods of standing and carrying books and requires the ability to push and pull a fully loaded cart of books to a designated location which may weigh up to 300 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in a library.
