DEFINITION
Under direct or general supervision, performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; assists in criminal investigations and the preparation of case reports; testifies in court; serves in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct or general supervision from assigned Sheriff’s Sergeant. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction over assigned staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy Sheriff: This is the fully-qualified level class in the series. Incumbents have increased responsibility and latitude when performing the full range of assigned duties. While incumbents are normally assigned to a specific geographic area for patrol or traffic enforcement, all functional areas of the law enforcement field, including assisting with investigations, youth services, administration, and training are included. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff Recruit by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff Corporal in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional direction of lower-level deputies and staff.
When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have one (1) year of prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the Deputy Sheriff.
These classifications function as peace officers within the authority and limits of California Penal Code Sections 830.1(a) and 832.
