Position: On-Call Forensic Nurse Examiner
Contract position Overview
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) provides medical-forensic care to patients who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, family violence, and other violent crimes through direct patient care at Safe Harbor locations and responds to hospitals as needed. FNEs collaborate with community-based advocates, law enforcement, criminal justice officials, and attorneys as part of Ventura County’s victim services continuum of care.
Responsibilities
- Provide trauma-informed compassionate care to victims of interpersonal violence from diverse backgrounds
- Respond to the Safe Harbor Ventura County exam sites or other hospital locations throughout Ventura County
- Provide comprehensive medical forensic exams and consultations consistent with national and state protocols and local policies
- Testify as an expert witness
- Maintain expertise as an FNE through peer review, continuing education, engagement with professional community, and review of current research and literature
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure in the state of California
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience in direct patient care
- Comfort with technology and electronic medical records, email, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Completion of a 40-hour Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) – Adult/Adolescent training that meets eligibility requirements for SANE-A/ SANE-P Board Certification through IAFN within 3 months of hiring date
- Completion of a 40-hour Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) – Pediatric training that meets eligibility requirements for SANE-A/ SANE-P Board Certification through IAFN within 12 months of hiring date
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working as a forensic nurse (SANE) and/or current SANE-A/SANE-P certification is strongly preferred
- Interest and willingness to precept new FNEs
- Commitment to supporting and facilitating an environment that promotes continuous learning and quality improvement
Hours and Schedule
This is a contracted on-call position. Shifts are scheduled monthly at the contract FNE’s availability. There is no minimum shift requirement, but competency must be maintained with a minimum of 10 forensic exams per year.
Pay and Benefits
- Comprehensive orientation and training program to ensure examiners are competent and confident to work as independent examiners. Examiners in training also receive $250 per exam during orientation period.
- Competitive standby/on-call rate of $14/hour
- Exam rate of $400 per exam; Additional $100 bonus for precepting trainees.
- $5,000 annual stipend for education, training, CEUs, and conferences
- Includes access to Midwest Regional Child Advocacy Center monthly peer review.
