Job Summary/Controls
Under the supervision of a superior officer, a Police Officer performs a variety of general and specific police functions in an assigned area in order to preserve and protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and prevent and detect crime on CMHA premises. These tasks require an understanding of departmental operations, and state, local, and federal statutes, and involve an element of personal risk.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Patrols a designated area, either in a motorized vehicle or on foot, in order to prevent crime or disturbance of the peace and apprehend violators. Conducts surveillance. Makes police presence visible in order to deter crime. Familiarizes self with patrol area and notes hazards, suspicious persons, and circumstances therein to report to superior officer. Maintains ongoing radio contact as directed.
- Responds to reported violations of regulator laws and ordinances including, but not limited to, drug violations, felonies, civil disturbances, domestic disturbances, and misdemeanors.
- Enforces vehicle and limited traffic laws; writes notices; and serves court writs.
- Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes, accidents, and civil disturbances; gather evidence and protects the crime scene until relieved by the appropriate superior officer or investigatory unit. May administer first aid, locate, question, and detain witnesses; pursues, apprehends, arrests, interrogates, and transport suspects and offenders as necessitated by circumstance; testifies and presents evidence in court.
- Observes, inspects, and reports the condition of CMHA property, noting any hazardous conditions; inspects and maintains department equipment.
- Writes crime reports and other required reports; completes forms describing circumstances of crimes, accidents, investigations, complaints, and other police activities.
- May perform functions of specialized police operations including, but not limited to, specific street activities, narcotics enforcement, scientific duties, and clerical tasks in support of street personnel.
- Progression within the police position is in accordance with the bargaining unit agreement. A police officer may also serve as a field-training officer.
- First officer on a crime scene coordinates the duties of other officers until the arrival of a superior; senior officers may serve as lead workers, coordinating and assigning tasks in the absence of superior officers.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with the public.
- Ability to work flexible hours, any shift, and when called in for emergencies.
- Ability to analyze situations rapidly and objectively, and to determine the proper course of action.
- Must possess in skill in handling vehicle in normal and emergency situations.
- Certification by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council.
- Ability to complete CPR and first aid certification requirements by the end of probationary period.
- Passage of a drug-screening test.
- Passage of physical and psychological examinations.
- Reliable transportation available.
- Possession of a personal home telephone.
- Possession of a personal firearm that meets established guidelines.
- Physical agility.

- Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License with no more than three points, and insurable under Agency guidelines.
