SALARY RANGE: $45,000-$65,000 annually
POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The school counselor provides individual and group guidance to grades 6 through 12 students, supporting them with academic, social, emotional, and career information by assessing their needs, offering counseling sessions, collaborating with teachers and parents/guardians, and developing plans to address student challenges and maximize student success. The counselors collaborate to improve student success for ALL students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes access and equity for all. Counselors help students to apply academic achievement strategies, manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills, and plan for postsecondary options (higher education, military, service, workforce, etc)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Individual and Group Counseling:
- Conduct one-on-one sessions with students to address personal, academic, or social issues, and facilitate group sessions on topics like stress management, conflict resolution, or college/career planning.
- Respond to immediate crisis situations and provide support to students experiencing difficult circumstances
- Keep confidential records of student interactions, assessments, and referrals
- Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, administrators, and other support staff to discuss student concerns and coordinate interventions
- Referrals for long-term support
Academic Advising:
- Assist students with course selection, study skills development, academic goal setting, and preparing for the college and career process.
- Manage student information in college and career planning platform
- Assist with recommendations and scholarships
- Monitor graduation requirement credits.
- Complete grade checks and monitor/communicate student progress with teachers, students, parents, administration and others
Support Programming:
- Design and implement preventative programs to educate students about social and emotional issues like bullying, substance abuse, and mental health
- Provide workshops and resources for parents to support their children's academic and social development.
- Advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
Data and Assessment:
- Administer and coordinate standardized tests, interpret results, and use data to identify student needs and track progress.
- Analyze data to identify student issues, needs and challenges
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelorʻs degree in education, counseling or related field required; Master's degree in school counseling or a related field preferred. Counseling license preferred.
- Uphold ASCA (American School Counselor Association) ethical and professional standards
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build rapport with students, parents, and colleagues
- Strong understanding of child development and adolescent psychology
- Experience with individual and group counseling techniques
- Knowledge of assessment tools and data analysis
- Ability to advocate for students' needs
- Other duties as assigned
WORK SCHEDULE: 7:30am – 4:00pm Monday – Friday. Some after-hours and weekend work may be required.
