What are the responsibilities and job description for the ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST position at Department of Transportation?
Under the direction of a Senior Engineering Geologist, the EG performs field and office work for geophysical and engineering geology studies. In this capacity, the EG conducts geophysical studies, field mapping, maintenance and calibration of geophysical equipment, implements solutions for technical testing problems, and works either as part of a team or independently as necessary to conduct field testing. The incumbent will receive overall supervision from a Senior Engineering Geologist (Geophysics Branch Chief), who provides general instructions for each assignment. The incumbent performs geophysical field investigations for foundation and roadway studies, fault investigations, landslide mitigation, cut slope design, groundwater surveys and other geotechnical studies. May also assist with conducting geologic mapping, landslide investigations, and other geologic studies. The incumbent must have knowledge of geophysical methods and applications, including seismic refraction and refraction tomography, resistivity, magnetometry, electromagnetics, ground penetrating radar and borehole geophysical logging. The applicant must be able to adapt non-destructive, geophysical methods to various types of investigations and to learn new methods. Additional desirable qualification includes general knowledge of rock mechanics, engineering geology fundamentals and site investigation protocol for both shallow and deep foundations of large structures.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Engineering Geologist Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.
While at their base of operation and unless otherwise required, incumbent will work day shift in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Field investigations will require travel to remote locations, where incumbent will be exposed to dirt, uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, and odor associated with fieldwork. Incumbent will work within lane closures adjacent to moving traffic. Incumbent will work around bulky/heavy materials and equipment in construction zones. Incumbent will work overtime and at night as project schedule demands. Incumbent may be given temporary assignments on other projects throughout the State as workload demands.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
