Job Overview
The Deputy Sheriff plays a vital role in maintaining public safety and enforcing the law within the community. This position requires a dedicated individual who is committed to upholding justice and protecting the rights of citizens. The Deputy Sheriff will work under the direction of a Sheriff, engaging in various law enforcement activities, including patrolling assigned areas, responding to emergencies, and conducting investigations.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out the duties of criminal investigations, civil process, warrants, and traffic enforcement.
- Other duties include courtroom security, prisoner transport, and any other duties the Sheriff may assign.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Federal and State laws, local ordinances, and all departmental regulations.
Experience
Candidates for the Deputy Sheriff position should possess a strong background in law enforcement or related fields. Preferred qualifications include:
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Certification in first aid and CPR is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with surveillance systems and techniques for monitoring public safety.
- Strong conflict management skills to de-escalate potentially volatile situations.
- South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification is desirable.
This role requires individuals who are not only skilled in law enforcement but also compassionate leaders dedicated to serving their community with integrity.
Minimum Standards for Employment
- Is a citizen of the United States.
- Is at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Is of good moral character.
- Has a high school diploma or GED.
- Able to pass a physical examination by a licensed physician.
- Has not unlawfully used any prescribed drug, controlled substance, or marijuana within one year before the time of application for certification.
- Have a South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification or be eligible to obtain one within 12 months of hire date.
- Must reside within Dewey County, SD or be willing to relocate within set time frame.
Other Information
- Dewey County is within the bounds of a Federally Recognized Tribal Reservation. Therefore it is a multi-jurisdictional area.
