Dorothy Day House is seeking Advocates/Monitors for our emergency storm shelter located in Berkeley California. This program will operate through the first week of November 2023 to April 15, 2024, with a possibility of an extension. Advocates will enforce safety policies and procedures, as well as relationship management as Dorothy Day House representatives with the participants in the program.
Advocates/Monitors must be reliable as the population using this shelter are dependent on this service through the harsh winter months. Advocates/Monitors will be expected to support program needs such as provide a safe environment, monitor environment for escalation prevention, Fire watch inside and outside building, that includes an administration task. Overnight Security Monitors will provide continued Patrolling premises regularly to maintain order and establish presence safety monitoring and as the shelters closes in the morning ushering participants, There will be participant engagement expectations for both shifts.
The ideal candidate for this position has De-Escalation Techniques, is familiar with the unsheltered community and not afraid to be firm but lead with love. The guests that come to this shelter are chronically homeless and may come with addiction or mental health needs which require Harm Reduction knowledge.

The shelter will operate 24 hours a day, every day. There are full-time and part-time positions available for day shift, swing shift and overnight shifts. This is a seasonal position through April 15, 2024 with the possibility of program extension.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Intake of all guests
Enforce policy and procedure
Maintaining clear communication to staff and end of day (EOD) notes
Provide linkage and referral information
Ability to effectively manage conflict using de-escalation techniques
Patrol premises regularly to maintain order and establish presence
Monitor and authorize entrance of guest
Secure all exits, doors and windows after end of operations
Identify disruptions or unlawful acts
Submit reports of daily surveillance activity and important occurrences via DDH incident report, or EOD report
Proven experience with customer service and homelessness
Excellent surveillance and observation skills
Familiarity with report writing for end of season narrative
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Knowledge of social service agencies
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with many distractions.
· CA Driver’s License

Pay: $23.00 per hour
Expected hours: 8 – 40 per week
