What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instrument Technician position at East Bay Municipal Utility District?
Under general supervision, the Instrument Technician performs a variety of skilled tasks involved with the installation, maintenance, and repair activities for process instrumentation, recording instruments, communications and telemetering systems, control systems, and distributed control system equipment related to water distribution systems, lift/pump stations, water treatment facilities, and hydropower facilities. The current job openings are within the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Division and the Wastewater Maintenance Division. Additional openings may be available during the next 12 to 24 months in the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Division.
Typical duties include:
• Installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and testing a wide variety of electronic recording, indicating, controlling, pneumatic and telemetering, and test instruments.
• Installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, calibrating, and testing controls and control systems, including programmable logic controllers and programmable automation controllers.
• Installing, maintaining, and field troubleshooting automatic dialers and communications systems.
• Utilizing vendor manuals and drawings to setup and maintain complex instruments.
• Performing periodic preventive maintenance and making inspections.
• Troubleshooting systems, equipment, and instrumentation to diagnose problems.
• Reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, mechanical drawings, piping/process and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), and specifications.
• Ensuring proper safety precautions are followed.
• Estimating labor, materials, and supplies necessary to perform specific assignments.
• Keeping records and making oral and written reports of work performed.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
The ideal candidate will have:
• Excellent skills and experience installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of instruments, equipment, and systems in an industrial environment.
• Ability to continuously learn new technologies in the field of industrial instrumentation.
The salary range is $10,157 per month increasing to $10,665, $11,198 and $11,758 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

3. Valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Physical ability to perform both the field and office aspects of the job, including sufficient strength to lift, carry, and hold supplies and equipment; agility and stamina sufficient to walk up extended stairs and ladders; senses and dexterity to recognize unusual equipment activity; to read schematics and electronic component marking; and to repair instruments, connect wires, and use test equipment; and where a variety of weather conditions, heights, and confined spaces are factors; willingness to work shifts or overtime as needed.
