What it's like being a Director of Compliance:
Position Summary:
The Director of Compliance serves as the senior leader of compliance activities within the organization, providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations, accreditation standards, specific grant requirements and contractual obligations.
Acting as an auditor and advisor, independent of the Agency’s programs, the Director of Compliance is responsible for developing, shaping and maintaining a robust compliance framework, elevating improvement opportunities as well as identifying potential best practices across programs.
In addition to maintaining a robust compliance environment, other key responsibilities include performing contract review, facilitating contract renewals, ensuring timely program audit preparations, and overseeing the Agency health and safety programs. The Director will also spearhead maintenance of legal entity compliance across the agency, contribute to the development and review of quality improvement plans, and lead efforts to promote continuous compliance awareness.
As a senior leader, the Director of Compliance plays an integral role in ensuring the organization’s accountability to regulatory and accreditation bodies, as well as federal and state laws. This role designs, implements, and oversees compliance strategies that safeguard the organization’s integrity, ensuring that the Board of Directors, leadership team, and staff operate within the bounds of legal and ethical standards, fostering organizational alignment with the company’s Code of Ethics and core policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and management of the agency's corporate compliance program. Provides strategic guidance and direction on the identification, development, and maintenance of compliance policies and practices in coordination with agency leadership.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards and continuously monitors for revisions to ensure agency-wide adoption and compliance.
  • Coordinates agency-wide accreditation (eg: CARF, etc) preparedness and audits, funding source audits and surveys; ensures the completion and follow-up on required corrective action plans by program staff.
  • Directs and manages agency-wide document retention and destruction policies, ensuring full compliance with legal, funder, and policy requirements.
  • Conducts an annual review of agency policies, implementing updates as directed by Agency leadership and the Board of Directors. Conducts cross-walk reviews of internal procedures against Agency-wide policies.
  • Ensures effective communication of policy, regulatory, and procedural changes to all relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Oversees internal compliance audits/reviews to ensure adherence to relevant laws, regulations, contract and accreditation criteria, compiling and reporting identified issues to key stakeholders for prompt resolution.
  • Identifies best practices across programs and opportunities for potential improvement.
  • Oversees the review of incident reports, ensuring the quality of documentation and adherence to regulatory timeframes and standards.
  • Provides input on staff training programs based on audit/review results
  • Recommends safety procedures to ensure the health and safety of clients and staff.
  • Oversees HIPAA compliance audits and ensures the organization’s privacy policies align with current regulations.
  • Provides expertise and leadership in contract review and interpretation across the agency.
  • Monitors the process for staff credentialing.
  • Identifies and escalates areas of concern related to safety, health, and welfare promptly.
  • Performs additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by agency leadership.

  • Reliable transportation to/from work and to complete out-of-building duties.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in compliance, risk management, audit roles, or similar experience.
  • Non-profit experience preferred but not required.
Work Environment:
Inside typical office environment, heated and air conditioned. Temperature 68 to 80 degrees F. Ambient noise, low, not requiring hearing protection. No other personal safety equipment required.
Individuals holding this position are required to attend initial orientation and periodic training offered by
Easterseals Redwood, and to complete all training required by Easterseals Redwood or regulation. Staff members demonstrate accuracy, timeliness, and a commitment to quality, safety, and a healthy, clean, and orderly environment in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, licensing, certification, accreditation, and business integrity standards.
Easterseals Redwood sites are climate controlled with standard lighting. When conducting duties outside of the building, lighting and temperature reflect seasonal conditions. Noise levels are moderate. There is minimal-to no exposure to hazardous chemicals with some exposure to contagious conditions, such as the common cold and bodily fluids.
Physical Demands:
In the role the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
