Job Title: Medical/Dental Billing Clerk

Department: Administrative

Reporting: Administrator/Assistant Administrator

Edgar County Public Health Department

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Medical/Dental Billing Clerk is responsible for submitting medical/dental claims to insurance companies and payers such as Medicare and Medicaid. This position ensures all claims are submitted, and payments are posted in a timely manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES/EXPECTATIONS

  • Checking eligibility and benefits verification for treatment, vaccines, and other services.
  • Reviewing service sheets for accuracy and completeness and obtaining any missing information.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic claim processing.
  • Following up on unpaid claims within the standard billing cycle timeframe.
  • Checking each insurance payment for accuracy.
  • Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary.
  • Identifying and billing secondary insurances.
  • Researching and appealing denied claims.
  • Answering all insurance telephone inquiries pertaining to assigned accounts.
  • Updating billing software with rate changes.
  • Updating and running collection reports.
  • Supports Administrator/Assistant Administrator as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains and works within established departmental and agency policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree preferred
  • Proficient in electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of business and accounting processes usually obtained from an associate's degree, with a degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Health Care Administration preferred.
  • Minimum one to three years of experience billing/coding in a medical/dental office setting.
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines, including MCO, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements and systems.
  • Competent use of computer systems, software, and ten key calculators.
  • Effective communication abilities for phone contacts with insurance payers to resolve issues.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment. Being able to triage priorities.
  • Problem-solving skills to research and resolve discrepancies, denials, appeals, and collections.
  • A calm manner and patience working with either patients or insurers during this process.
  • Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical/dental terminology likely to be encountered in medical claims.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality as per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
