Environmental Scientist Job Description

Edgewater Group has an opening for an Environmental Scientist to join a dynamic team of environmental professionals, engineers and architects. We are seeking a talented scientist with exceptional critical thinking skills to assist the Director of Environmental Sciences in developing and implementing scientifically sound controls, plans and policies.

Under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Sciences, the incumbent is an interdisciplinary team member who will be responsible for preparing and reviewing complex environmental documents, technical studies, and analytical reports to ensure compliance with numerous state and federal environmental resource laws and regulations.


Environmental Scientist Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental site assessments, including environmental impact studies, contaminated site investigations, and risk assessments.
  • Perform environmental sampling and data collection (soil, water, air, and biological) to support environmental analysis and decision-making, including wetland delineations, seagrass surveys, and listed species assessments.
  • Analyze environmental data and interpret results to identify potential environmental risks and provide recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and review environmental reports, regulatory compliance documents, and environmental permit applications.
  • Assist in the preparation of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and Environmental Site Assessments (ESA).
  • Collaborate with engineering and project management teams to integrate environmental considerations into project planning, design, and execution.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations, including environmental permitting and remediation projects.
  • Advise clients on environmental sustainability practices and environmental risk management strategies.
  • Participate in field surveys, audits, and environmental monitoring activities.
  • Provide technical support during environmental investigations and remediation projects.
  • Stay updated on the latest environmental trends, regulations, and technologies.
  • Advising governmental organizations, businesses and the public on potential environmental hazards and health risks
  • Developing solutions to control, fix or prevent environmental problems.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an environmental engineering, government agency, or consulting firm preferred. Experience time may be reduced in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations.
  • Experience with environmental site assessments, environmental sampling, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Proficiency in environmental modeling and analysis tools (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, or other relevant software).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex data in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices and green building certifications (e.g., LEED) is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to project sites as needed.


Preferred Skills:

  • Certification or willingness to acquire NAEP CEP Certification.
  • Familiarity with environmental risk assessment and remediation technologies.
  • Experience in renewable energy, construction, or infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with State and Federal wetland delineation procedures with an emphasis on plant species inventory and hydric soil analysis with Munsell Soil Charts.
  • Familiarity with submerged aquatic vegetation survey methods.

  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and navigate various terrains.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.

Office & Work Location:

Edgewater Group currently offers two different work locations - Apalachicola, Florida and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This position would have the option of working in either office but preferably in the Apalachicola office.
