The Asia Foundation “Foundation” is seeking a Government Relations Officer to join our Washington, D.C. office. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Government Relations Officer will support the Foundation’s government relations work, including with Congress and Washington-based programs. The ideal candidate will possess experience on Capitol Hill and elsewhere in the U.S. government, excellent communication skills, a familiarity with international development and Asia-Pacific affairs issues, and an understanding of the Asia-Pacific region.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain regular communication with Congressional staff, executive branch policy officials, and Washington-based organizations to advance the Foundation’s mission.
- Represent The Asia Foundation in meetings and develop strategies to raise awareness of our international development work with key stakeholders, including Congress.
- Coordinate engagement activities, including Capitol Hill meetings and briefings by visiting country representatives and other key staff.
- Monitor and track relevant legislation and policy materials, including legislative actions that impact The Asia Foundation and the Asia-Pacific region.
- Draft and produce outreach materials such as fact sheets, memos, talking points, and correspondence to articulate organizational international development priorities and programs.
- Prepare materials and conduct research to support meetings and outreach initiatives on international development and Asia-Pacific issues.
- Maintain up-to-date Congressional contact lists, track staff changes, and develop strategies to foster new and existing relationships.
- Monitor and research major U.S. executive branch policy priorities, projects, current issues in international development, foreign assistance, and U.S. policy related to Asia and the Pacific.
- Participate in internal administrative staff and organization-wide meetings, training programs, and other related meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in international affairs, international development, or other relevant field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in international affairs on Capitol Hill or elsewhere with the U.S. government.
- In-depth knowledge of the U.S. legislative process, especially in appropriations and authorizations.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex international issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and collaborate with other Washington, D.C. staff on programs and projects.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Self-starter with a collaborative mindset and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Experience living or working in Asia is a plus.
