Southern is Hiring a High Energy Piping Engineer (Energy Center) Near Birmingham, AL
- Stress analysis of HEP systems
- Specification of HEP supports
- Providing technical direction in the NDE inspection of HEP welds and components
- Participation in HEP related industry groups (e.g. ASME/EPRI)
- Application of ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code
- Field evaluation of HEP dynamic loading events
- Inspection and evaluation of HEP support systems
- Providing HEP temporary restraint/supporting plans in support of maintenance activities
- Structural evaluation of HEP hangers, assemblies, and associated structural steel
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university or PE license with related experience
- Mechanical or Civil/Structural Engineering degree preferred
- Detailed knowledge of HEP stress analysis principles and techniques
- Fossil power plant field experience working with HEP
- Fossil power plant field experience inspecting/troubleshooting HEP hanger and structural issues
- Working knowledge of HEP supports, including variable spring, constant and snubber function and design
- General knowledge of HEP NDE inspection techniques
- Working knowledge of Bentley AutoPIPE piping stress analysis software
- Working knowledge of the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code applicable to piping design and analysis
- Experience in the detailed design of HEP supports
- Experience working with contractors
- Working knowledge of formal calculation documentation processes
- General knowledge of ASTM specifications for piping, structural shapes, plates and bars
- General knowledge of structural engineering principles to provide HEP temporary restraint/supporting plans in support of maintenance activities (e.g. cutting pipe to install new valve)
- General understanding of fossil power plant systems and operations
- This position requires extensive travel (approximately 50%-75%)
- This will include both day-trip and overnight travel and will be primarily within the Southern Company Generation fleet.
