Job Description

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit law office and human rights organization that provides legal assistance to condemned prisoners, children in the criminal justice system, people wrongly convicted or sentenced, and prisoners suffering inhumane conditions of confinement. We advocate for more hopeful solutions to the violence, powerlessness, and despair that plague many marginalized communities, and developed the acclaimed Legacy Museum, National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama.

EJI is seeking a passionate and experienced Development Manager who will report to the Executive Director and Deputy Director of Development and work closely across our development team with a focus on donor service. The Development Manager will play a key role in ensuring that supporters have a consistent and high-quality experience when interacting with EJI. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is dynamic, self-motivated, and committed to social justice. This position is located in Montgomery, Alabama; relocation assistance will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement outreach, cultivation, and stewardship of new and existing donors;
  • Identify, research, qualify and cultivate relationships with individual funders that align with EJI’s mission and core values;
  • Respond to incoming requests from existing and potential donors;
  • Fully understand the organization’s program work and context in order to effectively communicate to supporters the impact of their contributions;
  • Carefully follow our standard operating procedures to ensure timely and efficient response, reporting, and accountability to all internal and external constituencies;
  • Maintain records and respond to requests related to estate gifts;
  • Accurately process donations, pledges, and donor records in the database and prepare donor thank you letters;
  • Assist with campaigns, mailings, special events, and other development functions in partnership with the Deputy Director of Development and Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience, with at least 4 years of nonprofit development and/or donor service experience, preferably at the national level with social justice, human rights or criminal justice initiatives;
  • Cultural competency and ability to relate to a diverse range of people and stakeholders with ease, discretion, and diplomacy;
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently, managing projects big and small from start to completion;
  • Ability to learn new processes and systems;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Raiser’s Edge or similar database system;
  • Understanding of and commitment to maintaining the confidential nature of fundraising efforts and donor information;
  • Well-organized, efficient, conscientious team player with meticulous attention to detail.

EJI seeks staff that are committed to our mission and to excellence in performance of their job responsibilities. A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements, and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
