EVANGEL UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE DIRECTOR JOB TITLE: Residence Hall Director
DEPARTMENT: Community Life
DIVISION: Student Development
CLASSIFICATION: Full time; permanent, contract, exempt
Job SummaryThe Residence Director (RD) is a professional, live-in, staff member in a traditional undergraduate residence hall, housing 150-250 students. The RD serves to support Evangel’s commitment to the integration of faith, living, and learning, as well as the behavioral standards of the University. Primarily responsible for: setting a positive role model and spiritual example; building community among residents: supervising and mentoring student leaders; supporting and developing educational programming; implementing administrative and judicial responsibilities; and maintaining professional standards. The RD is supervised by the Director of Community Life (DCL) and works with a team of five RDs to provide a cohesive co-curricular residential program for students.
Duties And Responsibilities Professional:
  • Meet biweekly with the Director of Community Life (DCL) to enhance personal effectiveness and development
  • Attend student development webinars and conferences at the discretion of the DCL
  • Study student development theory and have an understanding of developmental issues facing college age students
Personal Care
  • Model a lifestyle committed to overall health and wellness
  • Give priority to spiritual well‑being by selecting a local Christ-centered church for regular worship, participate in fellowship with Christian peers, and seek the Lord in prayer and study
  • Seek support from other faculty and staff members as well as friends outside the Evangel community
Relationship With Residents
  • Actively connect with students throughout the afternoon and evening hours five (5) days per week
  • Know residents by name and engage them in conversation on a daily basis
  • Provide leadership by helping students to adjust to residential living, promote a sense of community among hall members, and offer educational opportunities that enhance their development
  • Encourage students to connect their strengths and abilities to hall and campus positions
  • Serve as a resource and support for all students
  • Be the primary authority for the safety, wellbeing, and satisfaction of hall residents
  • Conduct the initial interview with students who are in violation of EU standards as well as offer support throughout the disciplinary process
Supervisory Duties
  • Actively participate in the Resident Assistant (RA) conferences, RA Seminar and Community Life meetings
  • Recruit. select, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate the RAs and Office Assistants
  • Meet weekly with the RA staff to provide on-going support, direction and education
  • Be actively involved in the hall government selections and elections and will meet biweekly with the executive officers
  • Attend all Hall Council (HC) meetings and serve as their advisor
  • Support the Assistant to the Director of Spiritual Life, and together select the Discipleship Administrator (DA) and leaders (DL) of the hall. The RDs also oversee the RH chapel services in conjunction with the DA.
  • Facilitate the activities of an educational programming team who will provide a campus-wide learning opportunity
  • Oversee the financial operations of the hall
  • Supervise late-entry violations, bed checks, room inspections, as well as all hall events and programs
  • Select and train student leaders to serve on the RH Accountability Panel as directed in the Student Handbook
Other Administrative Duties
  • Collaborate with the Public Safety Department in regard to incidents and emergencies
  • Communicates with the Facilities Dept. regarding damages to the building or needed repairs
  • Oversee the housing selection process for returning students and report room changes to the Housing Office throughout the year
  • Provide biweekly communication to residents via social media and through other means
Qualifications/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred in related field
  • Conveys a deep sense of care for students and understanding of student development needs
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, strong decision-making and organizational ability
  • Support the mission of the University, Student Development division, and Assemblies of God.
  • Evidence of a genuine and dynamic personal Christian faith
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Previous residential life experience; leadership or supervisory experience
Work EnvironmentMost of the work is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The RD will be required to operate a personal computer and equipment such as computer printers and other office equipment used in day-to-day operations. The RD will have 'on-call' responsibilities and will be required to respond to emergency and other situations during and after normal business hours.
