JOB TITLE :                                NURSING ASSISTANT HELPER

DEPARTMENT :                        NURSING

REPORTS TO :                           RN, LPN, DIRECTOR OF NURSING, & ASST. DON

JOB SUMMARY :

The Primary responsibility of this job is to provide clean, safe, orderly environment in resident rooms and units.  Performing non-nursing duties so that certified Nursing Assistants can have more time for direct resident care.

Must enroll in the CNA program.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :                    None required.  Must be able to read, write & speak the

English Language.

Experience :                  None required.  On-the-job training provided.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Keep clean linen carts stocked
  • Keep dirty carts emptied
  • Distribute ice
  • Make coffee for meals
  • Stock mild carts for meals
  • Make empty bed
  • Keep ancillary areas straight, clean, and safe
  • Responsible for Dining Room (DR) duties
  • Responsible for Diet Kitchen (DK) duties
  • Responsible for applying procedures to promote control of infection and disease
  • Responsible for assuring a safe environment
  • OTHER JOB FUNCTINS :

    1.         A.         1.         Reports to assigned floor to charge nurse

  • Prepares clean linen carts
  • Underpads
  • Depend Undergarments
  • Bed linen
  • Towels and wash cloths
  • Spray bottles with disinfectant solution
  • Takes cart to each corridor and restocks as needed
  • Notifies charge nurse when linen and disinfectant supplies are running low
  • Meal Time (DR) Duties
  • Distributes clean bibs to DR and individual rooms
  • Transports caddies between elevator area and DR
  • After meal, assures DR is left in proper order
  • Wipes tables and chairs with disinfectant solution
  • Sweeps and mops up large spills and notifies charge nurse if housekeeping is needed
  • Puts small feeding tables in DR closet
  • Picks up dirty bibs and takes to Dirty Utility Room
  • Picks up trays and records food intakes
  • Assist with serving and meal tray setup in Dining Room & Resident Rooms.  (Helpers are NOT to feed or mix any thickened liquids
  • Diet Kitchen (DK) Duties
  • Prepares coffee before and during meal as needed
  • Supplies DK cart and take it to DR
  • After meal, cleans up cart and returns supplies to proper place
  • Wipes counter tops and cart
  • Clean coffee maker and pot
  • Turn off coffee maker
  • Distributes ice to each resident’s bedside according to procedure
  • Makes unoccupied bed according to procedure
  • Empties dirty laundry carts at assigned times and replaces carts with clean trash bags
  • 1.         Checks tub / shower rooms at assigned times for neatness and cleanliness
  • Removes laundry and toilet articles and puts in proper place
  • Cleans tub, fixtures, floor, etc. as needed
  • Checks Clean Utility Room (CUR) at assigned times for neatness
  • and cleanliness

  • Keeps cabinet doors shut, countertop clean and work area
  • Clear of obstruction

  • Puts supplies in proper place in cabinets (i.e. Shampoo,
  • Thermometers, etc.)

  • Informs charge nurse when empty boxes need to be removed by housekeeping
  • Keeps “Clean” items away from trash can area
  • Keeps light off when area is not in use
  • Keeps door shut at all times
  • 3.         Checks Dirty Utility Room (DUR) at assigned times for neatness and cleanliness

  • Completes rinsing of heavily soiled laundry items that
  • Have been soaked and put in proper containers

  • Cleans and sanitizes all soiled bedpans / urinals / basins and stores in proper place
  • Lets charge nurse know when trash and linen containers
  • are filled to capacity

  • Changes mop water at assigned times
  • 4.         Check Equipment Storage Room at assigned times for neatness

    and cleanliness

  • Straighten up supplies on shelves
  • Organizes equipment to prevent clutter and obstruction
  • Notifies charge nurse of materials that need to be removed from the storage room
  • H.         1.         Knows and applies proper hand washing techniques

  • Knows and applies proper use of clean and soiled linens
  • Knows and applies proper use and care of equipment and supplies
  • Responsible for maintaining personal cleanliness
  • I.          A.         Spot checks residents’ rooms for cleanliness and neatness

  • Properly stores bedpan / urinal in bedside table
  • Thoroughly cleans empty bedside commode and stores inside resident’s bathroom
  • Keeps bedside tables and closets neat and clean
  • Notifies charge nurse of soiled personal clothing, Afghans, blankets, pillows, etc. that need to be removed from residents’ rooms
  • Notifies charge nurse of excessive, spoiled and uncovered
  • food items in residents’ rooms

  • Notifies charge nurse of personal toilet articles in bedside
  • table drawers that are not properly labeled

  • Cleans residents’ hair brush / comb weekly
  • Waters fresh flowers / plants and notifies charge nurse when they need to be discarded
  • B.         1.         Responsible to attend all scheduled staff meetings and

    in-service programs

  • Responsible for application of new information and
  • instructions as received

    C.         1.         Responsible for performing other non-nursing duties as

    requested by charge nurse
