Custodian/Maintenance
Job Description
The Custodian is responsible for performing custodial tasks and maintenance duties inside and outside of the church building.
The Custodian is responsible for providing a neat and clean facility at all times. Extra care must be given to preparing for various church events and activities and in responding to set up and take down requests for furniture and equipment for these events. The Custodian will also work closely with church volunteers that are in need of assistance as they perform their church activities and responsibilities in the church.
This is a 20 hour per week position, and additional hours as needed on Saturdays for special functions such as weddings and funerals to be sure church is clean and ready for Sunday activities. Weekly schedule is Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, Fridays 9am to 1pm and Wednesdays noon to 4pm (includes Trustees Meetings) . The Custodian reports to the Pastor and also receives instructions/direction from the Church's Board of Trustees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS with Key Responsibilities
Cleaning
· Clean facility weekly from the sanctuary to the classrooms.
· Custodian has "inspection responsibility" regarding building cleanliness after outside group uses church and will report findings to Pastor if needed.
· Be available to schedule cleanup after church related activities: weddings, funeral/memorial services, etc.
· Be aware of the general appearance of the building and grounds and correct any situations requiring cleaning that may arise outside of the listed duties, i.e. picking up trash, etc.
Maintenance
· Identify issues and make repairs. If needed, consult with Pastor to make repair plans.
· Secure facility (all doors) every time upon entering and leaving the building.
· Coordinate with Pastor for completion of special projects.
· For issues that are beyond scope, consult with Pastor on how to correct problem. If any of the corrections require outside contractors or specialists, the custodian may be required to identify, obtain bids, and/or oversee the contracts.
· Check the church facilities daily and make corrections or improvements as necessary, i.e. replacing light bulbs.
Supply Management
· Inventory and request orders for necessary cleaning supplies. All orders are to be made by the Front Office.
Building Management
· Communicate with Front Office regarding set-up of facility for meetings, special events, and Sunday worship.
· Work with Office Manager to ensure that outside groups do the necessary set up and clean up.
· Assist in set-up and tear-down for special church services such as setting up Memorials, Weddings, Christmas trees, Christmas candlelight service, Holiday Market, Rummage Sale, etc.
· Provides church supplies, tools, and assistance to volunteers doing odd jobs around the church as needed.
· Participate in staff meetings each week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High School diploma or GED.
· Knowledge of hand and power tools. Able to maintain hand and power tools and be able to use them safely.
· Experience in general/basic handyman skills, including basic carpentry, plumbing, general repair, and painting.
· Ability to lift 50 lbs.
· Knowledge of, or ability to learn operation of church’s HVAC, irrigation systems, and lighting systems.
· Must pass criminal background check and drug screening.
· Complete the Safe Sanctuary Course. Know and agree to abide by church Safe-Sanctuary practices manual and Employee Handbook.
