Job Summary

FIA is seeking a full-time glass arts educator and technician to help maintain large, well-equipped hot glass, cold working, kilnforming, and flameworking studios. Knowledge of all aspects of glass techniques and studio practice is necessary for success in this role. The Glass Programs Assistant is expected to work in coordination with the Glass Programs Manager, faculty, and technicians. The successful candidate must stay current with technology, tools, and techniques appropriate to our shops, and learn new skills as necessary. The Glass Programs Assistant is responsible for the general maintenance and repair of all studio equipment; provides instruction to students on the safe use of equipment and materials; oversees the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials, and performs other duties as assigned.

About the Flint Institute of Arts Museum Art School

The Flint Institute of Arts is the second largest art museum in Michigan and one of the largest museum-connected community art schools in the United States. Each year the museum serves more than 160,000 people through its exhibitions, events, and programs. The FIA Art School operates seven days per week offering more than 450 classes and workshops each year. The Art School includes 15 fully equipped studios including painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, glassblowing, flame working, welding, sculpture, and more.

Summary of Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clear, articulate verbal presentations, and perform live glass blowing demonstrations.
  • Perform daily upkeep, basic maintenance, and maintain orderliness of studios, equipment, and supplies.
  • Facilitate technical needs of studio users (students, faculty, visiting artists, etc.)
  • Assist with and produce glass objects for museum marketing, special projects, and glass demonstrations.
  • Develop and teach glass courses for a variety of ages and skill levels.
  • Assist with development and implementation of private workshop events within the various glass studios.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of glass education programs, community engagement programs, and other promotional events for the glass arts programs.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of part time glass staff for demonstrations, teaching roles, and general operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in glass, craft, and/or fine art
  • Two years experience in professional or academic glass studio
  • Two years teaching experience.

Skills Required:

  • Must be physically able to work in the glassblowing hot shop and flame working studios, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to work in close proximity to heat sources and fire.
  • Strong interpersonal/customer service skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in hot glass, flameworking, and kiln formed glass.
  • Proficiency in basic computer software
