Qualifications & Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Experience working with children with special needs is desirable.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge and understanding of children with special needs.
- Ability to operate specialized equipment such as wheelchairs, hydraulic lifts, etc.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.
- Stress management skills.
- Ability to react professionally for the safety of the students in the event of an emergency.
- Maintains order among the students, supervising their behavior and enforcing district standards of conduct on the bus.
- Monitors students' conduct, alert for emotional and physical conditions that may affect the safety and welfare of the students.
- Assists special needs students on and off the bus.
- Assists in conducting evacuation drills.
- Administers first aid.
- Assists substitute driver in following the route.
- Operates various types of lift mechanisms.
- Maneuvers wheelchairs up ramps, over curbs, and around inside of bus without assistance.
