Reports To: Building Principal

Pay Grade: Grade 3, Step 1, $16.19 per hour

Schedule: 5.9 hours per day / 29.5 hours per week / 5 days per week / School year position


Job Summary: The 35a(5) Literacy Intervention Paraprofessional is responsible for working as a team member in providing a quality educational programming for students. The 35a(5) Literacy Intervention Paraprofessional will provide instructional support for K-6 students as directed by teacher and/or principal.


Qualifications:

  • Must meet NCLB requirements: 60 college credit hours; or an Associate’s degree; or Workkeys certification
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to different instructional environments, including in-class and independent small-groups
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of students, schools, teachers, and classrooms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with elementary students
  • Bachelor’s degree (education preferred)
  • Certified as an elementary teacher in the State of Michigan
  • Previous experience with literacy intervention support
  • Knowledge of the reading system and reading instruction
  • Familiarity with instructional technology

Essential Job Functions:

  • Literacy-focused paraprofessionals will be assigned duties including one or more of the following. Specific duties will be determined by the school principal based on student needs at the time of the initial interview and as allowed by grant funding:
  • Provide in-classroom support to English language arts eligible students under the supervision of a classroom teacher
  • Provide direct literacy intervention support during Tier 2 designated times throughout the day
  • Observe and document eligible student progress as directed by the teacher
  • Work closely with the classroom teacher to share observations, insights, and strategies to improve student literacy outcomes
  • Support the teacher in implementing literacy curricular resources for students in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar
  • Inventory and organize literacy instructional resources
  • Assist with hands-on literacy activities such as small group targeted instruction, reading and writing workshops, reading comprehension exercises, and phonics games
  • Create a supportive and engaging classroom atmosphere that encourages student participation, self-confidence, and a love for reading and writing
  • Help maintain order during lessons and activities by managing student behavior and ensuring students are on task
  • Communicating with the principal about student progress as requested
  • Attending staff meetings as requested
  • Attending data review meetings as requested
  • Attending professional learning as requested
  • Consistent and reliable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned and as allowed by grant funding

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus. Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work may be performed indoors and/or outdoors. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.


Mental Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.

In accordance with the Administrative Support Staff Agreement
