Job Overview:
Fort Mifflin on the Delaware is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Interpretive Tour Guide to join our team. As an Interpretive Tour Guide, you will be responsible for leading groups of visitors through our grounds and buildings, as well as educating them on the unique history of Fort Mifflin as a Revolutionary War military stronghold, a Civil War prison and field hospital, a 20th century munitions depot, and a modern historic site, paranormal hotspot, and wildlife sanctuary.
Duties:
- Conduct guided tours for groups of visitors, showcasing key points of interest and sharing engaging historical and cultural information.
- Educate visitors on the significance and history of the attractions being visited within the context of the site's role as a National Historic Landmark.
- Utilize public speaking skills to effectively communicate with diverse groups of people.
- Execute our unique Guided Tour and Educational Programs, including Revolutionary War: A Soldier's Life, Blood and Sweat: Civil War Medicine, and Spirit of History.
- Accurate and informative interpretation of the Fort’s service during each of America’s major wars: Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I and World War II.
- Participate in occasional overnight and evening programs, including Paranormal investigations, Scout Groups, and acting as onsite contact for outside events.
Requirements:
- Strong public speaking abilities with excellent communication skills.
- Exceptional time management skills to keep tours on schedule.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities to lead groups effectively.
- Multilingual or bilingual proficiency is a plus.
- PA State Child Abuse Clearances & Background Check.
- Extra consideration will be given to candidates that can cover very occasional overnight shifts, especially September-November.
No prior experience is required! However, extra consideration will be to candidates with experience or passion in public history and related fields, as well as customer service, education, and/or related fields. This role would be excellently suited to college students, retired educators, and history enthusiasts seeking a fulfilling, part-time/per-diem role.
The stated mission of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware is to develop, preserve and interpret Fort Mifflin as a National Historic Landmark whose unique history, original fabric and surrounding environment will be protected and used to educate and enrich students and families and serve as a significant regional tourist resource.
