Salary: $3,974 - $6,282/bi-weekly

JOB SUMMARY

The job duties of the Assistant County Attorney include but are not limited to represent the State of Kansas in the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor crimes, Child in Need of Care cases, and Juvenile Offender cases; to prepare appellate briefs and orally argue them before the Kansas appellate courts; to assist law enforcement and give advice when needed or requested; and to provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to County residents and the general public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Assistant County Attorney might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Assistant County Attorney. Operational Functions:

  • Prosecute assigned cases under guidelines established by the County Attorney.
  • Litigate any and all civil forfeiture cases submitted to the Geary County’s Attorney’s Office by various law enforcement agencies.
  • Coordinate criminal investigations as necessary and assist law enforcement in the drafting and execution of search warrants.
  • Litigate criminal cases, to include jury selection, direct examination and cross examination of witnesses and complete any post-conviction litigation to include appeals.
  • Assist law enforcement and other prosecutors, when needed or requested.
  • Review all assigned cases for prosecution if appropriate and determine appropriate charges.
  • Attend all court proceedings necessary for the prosecution of all assigned cases.
  • Prepare and timely file all necessary pleadings related to all assigned cases.
  • Communicate with all necessary persons in all assigned cases.
  • Assist governmental or private local, state and federal agencies with the promotion of public safety and the current status of the law.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation for an accredited college or university as a Juris Doctor.
  • Admittance to the Kansas Bar Association and maintain good standing.
  • Three (3) years legal experience preferably within a local government.
  • A valid Kansas driver’s license required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the job of Assistant County Attorney.
  • Ability to be proficient in criminal prosecution to a level which guarantees reasonable success in prosecuting cases.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local resolutions, procedure manuals, MSDS sheets, safety manuals; and warning labels.

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, computer and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Other equipment could be required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers and management.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, SDS sheets, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, etc; and warning labels.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret financial reports and related materials.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Ability to use good judgment and effectively solve problems.

Work Environment

  • Works primarily in an office setting.

Due to the volume, scope, size of staff and nature of public service this office provides, full-time regular attendance is essential
