POSITION SUMMARY
The Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for collecting patient financial information and processes all patient’s sliding fee application and all other applications related to financial hardship. The Financial Counselor will also help indigent patients seek financial assistance with government, private, and local agencies.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Responsible for various reports and scheduled tasks as assigned by supervisor
- Ensures services provided to patients are done so in a timely manner and are of the highest quality.
- Ensures that patients are provided with current information regarding sliding fee and other financial assistance programs.
- Ensure and uphold the confidentially requirements of all patient records, and manage all daily task and activities consistent with HIPAA, state and federal laws and regulations, as well as the clinic’s policies and regulations regarding confidentiality and security.
- Ensure all actions, job performance, personal conduct and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner at all times.
- Uphold and ensure compliance with and attention to all corporate policies and procedures, as well as the mission and values of the organization.
PRIMARY TASKS & DUTIES
- Has complete understanding of financial policies and procedures.
- Ensures that all new patients complete a sliding fee application and process applications.
- Responsible for making sure all sliding fee information is current and entered in the EMR and/or pharmacy system in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate, thorough filing of all paperwork.
- Participates in meetings and training as required.
- Provide each patient with the understanding of their options for indigent services and act as a liaison between the patient and provider(s).
- Provide information on the services provided in the area such free ride assistance and other similar programs.
- Ensures that all renewal applications are up to date and include all required documentation.
- Ensures that all financial levels assigned to patients are accurate and match documentation provided.
- Responsible for conducting phone interviews with patients, ensuring that required documentation is presented at upcoming appointments.
- Meeting individually with patients to determine their financial needs; ensuring patients have been educated on services provided.
- Works collaboratively with billing department and front desk to ensure there is a complete understanding related to patient’s financial plan.
- Serve as the point of contact for all financial assistance needs.
- Other duties, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/KEY COMPETENCIES
- Function in a multi-tasking, multiple priorities environment, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Utilize a wide variety of office technology and tools to collect, enter, process, file patient records and documentation
- Must be able to function in a fast paced, sometimes stressful environment
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education
- High School diploma or equivalent. Must be able to speak read, write and understand English.
Professional
- “Skilled” business office experience.
- Communication, customer service or working with the general public, preferably in a medical care facility.
- 2-5 years customer service/patient relations.
- General computer competence including basic Word and potential to be trained on specific software for patient information, billing and communication.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred but not required.
Physical/Environmental
- Ability to interact with computer screen for up to six hours at a time (visual acuity required).
- Must have manual dexterity for use of keyboard. Ability to remain stationary for periods of up to four hours. Ability to communicate via phone, mail and in person to resolve disputes, solve problems, etc.
- Capacity to function in a sometimes stressful, multi-tasking environment
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $16.50 per hour
