Position Title:            Apprentice, Dive Maintenance

Direct Report:           Assistant Manager, Dive Maintenance

 

Position Summary

Job duties of the Georgia Aquarium Apprentice, Dive Maintenance are specific to Working Dives. The diver will assume a role of working diver under the regulations for commercial diving as outline by OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T. Commercial-oriented diving tasks shall include, but not be limited to deployment, moving and retrieving of heavy objects; using heavy hand or power tools; the inspection, maintenance, and repair of aquarium exhibits; the application and repair of underwater coatings and liners, and; other tasks NOT exempt from OSHA’s commercial diving regulations. Further, the Apprentice, Dive Maintenance shall be required to work with a diverse team of divers in the implementation of dive safety procedures and guidelines ensuring safety at the facility and off-site. Apprenticeship will last approximately one year before employee becomes eligible for Diver I position.

Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in professional development as needed.
  2. Meet all applicable requirements as outlined in Georgia Aquarium’s Diving Operations and Procedures Manual.
  3. Adhere to dive safety policies and procedures.
  4. Learn to maintain, inspect, and repair dive equipment to ensure all is within the proper operating parameters to provide a safe working environment for the divers.
  5. Help to ensure that all divers are following policies set forth by the Dive Control Board.
  6. Perform both working and scientific dives in support of the program mission on a regular basis.
  7. Take active role in the aquarium’s exhibit maintenance and repair program, which may include, leak detection and repair via applied injection techniques and underwater acrylic restoration polishing.
  8. Assist Zoological Operations and Life Support Systems staff in the repairs and modifications of the LSS systems.
  9. Assist with the inventory of all related diving equipment and parts.
  10. Maintain the highest standards of work area cleanliness at all times.
  11. Interface effectively with other departments to maintain the highest standards of quality.
  12. As needed, interact on behalf of Georgia Aquarium, with guests, media, public, etc.
  13. Perform other duties as workload necessitates.
  14. Effectively express ideas verbally and non-verbally and actively listen to individuals and and groups.
  15. Express ideas clearly and concisely in written form using letters, reports, and other documents.

Qualifications: 

  1. High School Diploma required.
  2. Hold current First Aid and Adult CPR, and Oxygen Provider certification or the ability to obtain one.
  3. Hold current dive certification(s) from a nationally recognized agency or agencies, the level of Open Water and/or ADCI at the minimum.
  4. Hold a valid driver’s license.
  5. Be proficient with Microsoft Office Products.
  6. Pass Georgia Aquarium’s Written Dive Knowledge Exam (minimum score of 80%).
  7. Pass Georgia Aquarium’s Dive Physical.
  8. Pass Georgia Aquarium's Swim Test.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

In addition, the daily physical requirements specific to the Apprentice, Dive Maintenance may include:

  • Typing on a computer keyboard
  • Sitting for long periods of time
  • Walking
  • Lift and carrying in loads excess of 50 pounds 100 feet
  • Ability to travel (car) as needed
  • Ability to swim
  • Ability to use SCUBA equipment
  • Ability to maintain daily contact with a living collection of plants and animals
