Part-Time German Course Instructor
Location:
· In-person at the Germanic-American Institute, Saint Paul, MN
· Virtual – VIA Zoom, Central Standard Time (Applicant must reside in Minnesota or Illinois. The GAI is not equipped to offer/support work visas.)

Work Environment & Culture
The Germanic-American Institute is a Minnesota non-profit organization, located on historic Summit Avenue in St. Paul. The GAI is the most prominent center for German language and culture education in the United States. Our mission is to connect people to a broader world through German language and culture. We operate a comprehensive adult-language education program, two German Immersion preschools, a Saturday school for kids, and summer camps. In addition to producing a wide array of cultural programs throughout the year, the GAI is also a Goethe-Institut proficiency exam testing center and sanctioned Kulturgesellschaft.
Position Overview
The ideal candidate for this job is passionate about German language education and has years of experience with teaching German as a foreign language. The GAI offers a variety of classes for beginners to nearly-fluent adult students. Adult students range from working professionals to retirees, to the occasional high school student, with many different reasons for learning German. The core academic curriculum is provided, with the ability to supplement and adjust based on individual preferences.
Requirements / Qualifications
§ Native or near-native fluency in German.
§ Professional experience and/or training in teaching German as a foreign language or equivalent.
§ Ability to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
§ Familiarity with a variety of instructional methods, materials, and techniques.
§ Availability to teach in the evenings: 1 to 2 evenings per week.
Availability / Hours:
The positions average one or two classes per week with each adult class lasting 2.5 hours. Most classes are scheduled on weekday evenings, and the occasional weekday morning. Classes are typically 12-weeks and are offered in-person at the GAI or online via Zoom. Courses are offered year-round with the heaviest class load during Fall, Winter and Spring sessions. Additional communication with students as needed. Graduate degree and/or teaching licensure highly preferred but not required.
Compensation / Wage: $38.00 to $42.00 per instructional hour (DOE). This is a part-time position, with the opportunity to obtain more hours through tutoring, subbing, and positive classroom feedback.
