Ghirardelli Associates is currently looking to hire an Assistant Resident Engineer. This position will be based out of our Stockton Office. This is an opportunity to work with an experienced team of professionals!
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Resident Engineer will support the Resident Engineer by ensuring the successful execution of construction inspection projects. Responsibilities include performing field inspections, supervising inspection teams, reviewing project documentation, and providing quality assurance. This role involves frequent client interaction and coordination with multiple stakeholders to facilitate all jobsite activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assist the Resident Engineer with all construction engineering tasks, including field inspections, traffic control system compliance, and enforcement of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).
- Prepare, analyze, and process Contract Change Orders (CCOs) and Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to plans, specifications, and safety standards, while documenting daily work progress.
- Coordinate with the Authority, Design Builder, PCM teams, and third-party utilities or railroads; attend meetings, review documents, and help resolve utility and railroad-related issues.
- Prepare status reports and maintain detailed tracking logs for project issues and resolutions.
- Evaluate contractor proposals, inspect material quality, and perform quantity takeoffs and cost estimates.
- Verify labor compliance, certified payrolls, and adherence to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws.
- Perform and oversee construction surveys.
- Review construction schedules to ensure feasibility and compliance with project requirements.
- Support contract administration for Federal, State, and Local transportation projects, including reviewing contractor designs for compliance with contract specifications.
- Assist with administering and developing training programs and manuals as required.
- Execute assigned tasks under the direction of senior engineers and supervisors, serving as a technical expert without independent decision-making authority.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) preferred.
- California Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- 3-5 years of experience working on construction projects or as an Assistant/Resident Engineer with public agencies.
- Experience reviewing utility/railroad designs and identifying land rights conflicts is preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- General understanding of land survey principles and ability to plot and interpret legal descriptions.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Project, Power BI, scheduling software, and SharePoint.
- Knowledge of applicable regulations and manuals, such as the California High-Speed Rail Authority Right-of-Way Manual, Caltrans Utility Relocation Manual, and relevant Federal and State statutes.
