Position Summary

To further the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of program activities and events. Design and deliver program activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities at the pool. Assist in the management of the overall camp operation under the direction of the Camp Director.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just ninety miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Plan, supervise, and assist in the direction of a safe, innovative, and fun aquatics program. 
    • Coordinate (with the help of aquatics specialists) schedules that meet camp goals. 
    • Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff. 
    • Deliver creative aquatic program activities. 
    • Plan a schedule for each program/village tailored to this specific program that meets program promises.
  2. Train and supervise aquatics specialists. 
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. 
    • Train aquatics specialists and camp staff in their aquatics program responsibilities. 
    • Schedule, supervise, and evaluate aquatics specialists to provide a safe and high-quality program. 
  3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the aquatics program area. 
    • Set up aquatics program areas. 
    • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment. 
    • Conduct pre-season and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment prioritizing safety. 
    • Check equipment and report maintenance requests to the leadership team. 
    • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. 
    • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring the timely arrival of materials. 
    • Survey the pool area daily and keep the area free of hazards and debris.  
  4. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
    • Attend all camp staff meetings. 
    • Assist in the planning of any special events at or near the pool. 
    • Provide check in/out support and outstanding customer service to families.  
  5. Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 21 years of age or older by the start of camp.
  • Two or more years of experience as a lifeguard with a minimum of six weeks’ previous experience in a management or supervisory position at an aquatic facility. 
  • Must possess and maintain a current Lifeguard Certification throughout the position’s employment dates.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.  
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings. 
  • Ability to live onsite acting in an on-duty capacity for the duration of the camp season.  
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience 

  • Documented experience teaching or interacting with aquatic programming for youth.
  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
