Job Summary : The Girls Inc. Public Policy Office seeks a full-time Advocacy Associate to support the expansion of our national policy and advocacy work. The position will be based in D.C. (with a hybrid in-person / remote schedule), will report to the Director of Public Policy, and will work collaboratively with other members of the Public Policy Team.

Duties / Responsibilities : The Advocacy Associate will be responsible for the following, as relates to the issues on our Policy and Advocacy Platform :

  • Leads non-partisan message development to strengthen Girls Inc.’s reputation and position, particularly in policy and advocacy spaces.
  • Leads development of Public Policy department’s internal and network communications, including the quarterly Congressional newsletter.
  • Supports creation of resources such as talking points, toolkits, and other materials for dissemination to Girls Inc. affiliates, policy makers, the media, partner organizations, and other advocates as appropriate.
  • Supports the drafting of advocacy communications, including but not limited to, letters to Congress and federal agencies; blog posts, newsletter text, social media messages, and “Action Alerts” to mobilize Girls Inc. network around legislative and other priorities of the public policy office.
  • Collaborates with Marketing and Communications team on language and strategic objectives.
  • Works broadly across departments to ensure awareness of Public Policy and Advocacy related activities and goals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Policy.

Qualifications : Girls Inc. seeks hard working, enthusiastic, and flexible individuals with a passion for the rights and advancement of girls and young women. Other qualifications include :

  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • 2-5 years of professional experience involving messaging and communications (in politics, federal or state government, or nonprofit work strongly preferred but not required);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the confidence and knowledge to provide counsel and recommendations to colleagues;
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge and / or strong interest in policymaking and legislative processes;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing projects and tasks;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a small team;
  • Demonstrated commitment to Girls Inc. mission and goals, including advancing gender, racial, and economic justice.

  • Physical Requirements :

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
