Special Education Paraprofessional

Position Summary:

Special education paraprofessionals assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. This will primarily occur as a one-on-one, but may serve as assistance with other students identified in special education or not. Paraprofessionals generally work in an inclusionary setting (i.e. least restrictive environment), and may assist in pull-out services. The special education paraprofessional assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities, assists students to specials (art, music, PE, library and SEL), assists students at lunch and recess, and cares for their physical, emotional health and safety, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships. He or she also performs clerical duties, as well as other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Assist the teacher with the implementation of lesson plans
• Assist with the preparation of instructional materials
• Administer tests to small groups/one-on-one to student(s) who may require testing accommodations
• Modify assignments or materials to meet the needs of the students
• Assist in the implementation of IEP's, and assist in meeting IEP goals
• Consultation and collaboration with Special Education and General Education Teachers as well as related service staff
• Ensure that necessary classroom supports are in place for the student(s)
• Understand and use appropriate techniques to modify behavior or engage in physical prompting
• Accompany the students to the cafeteria, and assist with feeding (as required)
• Accompany the students on field trips
• Provide personal assistance in the restroom, if needed; assistance with diapering and dressing may also be required (training provided if necessary)
• Assist with lifting and/or carrying a student, as required
• Meet the students at drop off in the morning, and accompany them to dismissal in the afternoon
• Ongoing communication with parents and other staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate effectively with students and teachers.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas so that the students will understand. Ability to provide the appropriate level of assistance; patience to allow a student to complete a task at his or her own pace.
• Ability to carefully follow the instructions of the teacher.
• Ability to remain calm under trying circumstances when dealing with emotional/physical outbursts.
• Adaptability; willingness to accept assignments, and adapt to the needs of a group of students or a particular student.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to request assistance from other staff members and provide assistance to other staff members.
• Some experience with, exposure to, or understanding of the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Education:

• Minimum of High School Education
• Minimum of one year experience working with children or Early Child Education
• Experience with children with special needs preferred
• CPR, First Aid, or Work Health Physical Certification preferred

Salary : $20,000 - $23,000
