SUMMARY:
Improve the overall health of the Tribal community by providing dental care to patients in the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, and other diagnostic equipment.
- Diagnose disease, injuries, and malformations of teeth, gums, and related oral structures.
- Review and document in the dental chart medical histories at each visit.
- Analyzes x-rays to evaluate patient's dental needs.
- Consult with patient's health care provider as needed.
- Understand and follow infection control procedures.
- Formulate a plan of treatment for patient's dental health.
- Refers patients with conditions and treatments beyond the scope of on-site intermediary level infirmary to an appropriate off-site dental facility in emergency cases or for cases the Dentist is not qualified to treat.
- Administer anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patients during procedures.
- Extract teeth when necessary, using the most appropriate anesthetic technique.
- Restore and replace teeth damaged by decay, trauma, or disease.
- Design, make, and fit prosthodontic appliances.
- Treat exposure of pulp-by-pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or root canal, using dental instruments and fill pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials.
- Prescribe antibiotics and other medications for patients as medically necessary.
- Provide instruction and advice on oral health care including proper diet, brushing, and flossing techniques, the use of fluoride, and other preventative measures to maintain healthy oral tissue and prevent oral disease.
- Ensure that all dental care is adequately and accurately documented in each patient's chart within a timely manner.
- Promote and provide professional dental supervision to assigned dental staff.
- Provide leadership, training, and overall direction to all dental staff.
- Provide training and direction to dental support staff by adhering to Federal, State, and local policies.
- Comply with the CDS's "Universal Precautions" for the prevention and transmission of HIV and other communicable diseases.
- Comply with the standards of the Joint Commission, applicable provisions of the law and the rules and regulations of any government authorities pertaining to licensure and regulations of healthcare personnel.
- Directly supervises dental staff, which includes but is not limited to assigning and reviewing work, instructing, training, establishing schedule, setting objectives, recommending hiring and disciplinary action.
- Works cooperatively within the office, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and other agencies as needed
- All other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- D.S (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or D.M.D (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry)
- Two to three years of related experience
- Valid Kansas driver's license, must be insurable with the Nation's insurance
- State of Kansas Dental License active and in good standing
- Active DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) License
- CPR Certification
- Successfully complete 60 hours of continuing education courses within the previous two-year period
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology to record and report medical information and health insurance billing terms
- Knowledge of the regulations on confidentiality and patient eligibility
- Must have a high level of sensitivity to young children, families, and community on and near the Kickapoo Reservation
- Knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation for purposes of documenting observations and recordings used in the provision of services
- Must possess ability to communicate professionally; both orally and in writing with a service-oriented approach, sometimes in stressful circumstances
- Must possess professional work ethics, manner, and appearance
- Must possess the ability to operate general office equipment, including but not limited to 10-key calculator, telephone, computer and operating systems, computer software programs (Microsoft Office programs), fax/copier machine
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position
- A record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Four to six years of related experience
