The General Superintendent is responsible for safely, accurately and efficiently directing all vessel & terminal operations to achieve the desired departmental outcomes.
Qualifications
Ideal Candidate description:
The successful candidate will be a stevedoring and marine terminal operations professional with at least five years of directly related experience. S/he will possess excellent leadership skills and have been in a supervisory role for at least two years, prior. S/he will be able to effectively communicate across the entire organization, from the longshoremen working at the terminals, to colleagues on the management team. S/he will also interact extensively with customers and representatives outside the organization. S/he must possess sound decision making and risk management skills to benefit both the customer and the Company.
Candidate Experience:
- 5 years of stevedoring and marine terminal operations experience with a minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience;
- Bachelor's degree from a Maritime Academy, in Maritime Administration or related field; relevant working experience may be substituted;
- Proven experience leading through change, fostering a cooperative work environment, and motivating others to drive continuous improvement;
- Decisive individual who possesses both a strategic and operational focus;
- Strong leadership demeanor as well as the ability to effectively influence and make recommendations at all levels of the organization;
- Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include knowledge of Excel skills;
- Required to obtain a TWIC card;
- Bi-lingual in English/Spanish preferred;
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in order to communicate with internal and external customers, at all organizational levels;

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- The employee is continuously required to sit;
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, bend forward, squat, twist, pinch and reach overhead;
- Employee may be required to reach forward, sit, grasp and exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion and finger dexterity. Eye-hand and eye-hand-foot coordination may also be required;
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move, carry, push and/or pull up to 30 pounds;
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment;
- Employee is frequently required to talk and hear;
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus;

Responsibilities
- Responsible for the safety of all vessel and terminal work crews, ensuring safety standards are followed
- Maintains contact with the Port Captains, steamship lines, or agencies to establish timing of ship arrivals.
- Responsible for personnel actions involving Gulf Stream Marine operational employees such as guidance, training, disciplinary, labor allocation, merit and status changes.
- Assigns and supervises Vessel Superintendents
- Meets with Port Captain, Superintendents and Clerks to discuss stowage plans and identify resources (labor, equipment & gear) needed.
- Responsible for planning vessel operations and ensures labor and equipment needs are met as ordered from Vessel Superintendents.
- Responsible for all vessel documentation such as mate’s receipt, OS&D, materials list and damage reports etc.
- Works with departmental heads to ensure quality, personnel management, safety, productivity and customer needs are achieved.
- Responsible for the determination of heavy lift needs, critical lifts, secure labor and equipment as appropriate for cargo type.
- Provide input to daily operations summary report.
- Responsible for ensuring all cargo has been loaded on the vessel and perform a visual inspection of the terminal yard prior to the dismissal of labor.
- Ensure all cargo has been removed from vessel and accounted for as per discharge stowage plan.
- In the event of a Safety or Quality nonconformance – responsible to lead or assist with investigation and draft safety report explaining root cause and preventative actions.
