Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
Responsible for the custodial services for the school division including planning, development, coordination, supervision, budgeting, and training for the department. Responsible for the delivery of custodial cleaning supplies, cleaning equipment, and sanitary supplies to all facilities. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

- Assists in the hiring and assignment of the custodial staff, including substitutes, and recommends the employment of employees to the Human Resources Department.
- Develops and implements training programs to educate custodial staff in efficient methods for providing custodial services.
- Oversees the work of all the custodial staff.
- Develops and coordinates custodial assignments, schedules and routines to ensure clean, sanitary and safe buildings and grounds.
- Visits all schools on a regular basis and inspects the performance of the custodial staff and documents the inspection results in a quarterly report.
- Evaluates the custodial staff with input from school administrators. Provides counseling and corrective disciplinary actions with appropriate documentation as required. Recommends the termination of employees to the Human Resources Department.
- Prepares and manages the Custodial Services department operating budget.
- Approves overtime and annual leave requests for the custodial staff and ensures that timesheets are approved in compliance with School Division Policies.
- Assigns and approves custodial substitute requests and ensures that there is an adequate pool of substitutes to backfill vacancies. Attends job fairs as required.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of custodial and sanitary supplies and ensures that all supplies are properly stored, labeled, and disposed, and that SDS are current and readily available for all products.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of cleaning equipment and ensures that all equipment is in working order.
- Ensures the order and cleanliness of the Custodial Warehouse.
- Works with the County Procurement Office to write bid specifications for supplies, equipment and contracted services.
- Delivers and moves office and classroom furniture and equipment as required.
- Responds to emergency situations and supports the Maintenance Department as directed.
- Oversees and provides contracted snow removal services at facilities.
- Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, hazardous materials, and conditions, and other work related precautions. Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public. Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with, lead, motivate and communicate with a wide variety of people from varying backgrounds and interests. Ability to analyze diverse situations and use sound reasoning skills to apply an appropriate solution in a timely and efficient manner. Adaptable to changing priorities and ability to deal with frequent interruptions. Effectively responds to routine inquiries and disputes. Ability to work within and maintain a budget. Prepare and maintain accurate records.
Intermediate computer skills, including an aptitude to learn industry specific software, manage and communicate effectively via email, and use MS Office software to track relevant information. Ability to collaboratively plan and manage projects, including scheduling personnel, materials and equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma. At least five years' experience in the custodial / industrial housekeeping field. A minimum of two years of supervisory experience. Valid VA Driver's License.

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the computer, telephone, social media, and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment. Requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 30 lbs., grasping, and repetitive motions. The environment may expose the employee to potentially hazardous cleaning substances. Employee may be required to drive in inclement weather when necessary. Travel to school sites throughout the County is common. Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is required.
