What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Unit Leader position at Happy Hollow Children's Camp?
JOB SUMMARY: Happy Hollow Summer Camp, which hosts 8 weeks of overnight camp for children ages 7-14, is seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and creative Unit Leaders to provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. The Unit Leader is responsible for overseeing each cabin group of campers, providing support for the cabin counselors, and assisting with camper conflicts and discipline issues. Duties include running campfire programs, daily check-ins with counselors, and filling in for counselors when needed. The ideal candidate should be an excellent multitasker with a genuine passion for working with and empowering young people.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- College student or at least 21 years of age
- At least one year of previous residential camp experience
- Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a camp setting
- Proven leadership experience
- Ability to creatively schedule programs and staff
- Ability to supervise both staff and campers
- Good character, integrity, and adaptability
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
- Physical ability to participate in strenuous activities (hiking, swimming, climbing)
- Ability to pass a background check
- First Aid/CPR certification (camp will provide)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Abide by all camp rules
- Successfully complete pre-camp staff training
- Prepare weekly folders for counselor distribution
- Supervise and help counselors with weekly activity scheduling
- Collect all camper evaluations at the end of the session and summarize for parents
- Assist counselors with camper-behavior problems and keeping parents informed if needed
- Assist in planning agenda for weekly staff meetings
- Participate in the planning of campfires, special days, special evenings, and themes
- Function as a support person for all staff
- Inform camp leadership on any problems or how the staff are doing
- Be responsible for the welfare of each counselor
- Help ensure morale of staff by monitoring that staff get enough rest, time/days off, and that recreational opportunities are available to them
- In the event a counselor is ill, or their employment is terminated, lead the activity temporarily
- Supervise and check the writing of all final staff reports as they pertain to campers and program
- Assist in evaluating the entire camp operation with suggestions for the following season
- Other duties as assigned
