Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned College Counselor to support the College Success Office.
The College Counselor will bring a passion for the mission of the Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The College Success Office provides year-round academic, administrative, and emotional support to graduates of HCZ’s Promise Academy high schools and after-school programs. Our mission is to ensure that our participants are provided with the resources and guidance needed to be successful in college and beyond. The main components of the College Success Office include student outreach, academic support and guidance, financial aid advisement, college transfer assistance, and community-building efforts within our program.
We are currently seeking a College Counselor for our CSO Education and Innovation Team. The College Counselor (E&I) role is geared toward supporting scholars exploring various pathways to persist through post-secondary education. This position is ideal for applicants who are personable, skilled communicators, knowledgeable about various pathways (e.g., college and certification programs) for scholars, and highly organized. The ideal candidate will have experience working with high school and/or college-aged scholars, be an effective communicator, be able to connect with scholars and families in person and via email and maintain accurate records to ensure historical accuracy and smooth office functionality.

Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or related social services field preferred
- At least two to three years of experience in education, non-profit administration, or student support is preferred.
Who You Are
- Knowledge of admissions and enrollment policies, alternative programs/vocational studies.
- Knowledge of higher education, financial aid, and postsecondary education
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including drafting professional emails and engaging with diverse populations.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficiency in Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the program, including some evenings and weekends
What You’ll Do
- Manage a caseload of 100 plus participants struggling after high school and in college using the appreciative advising model focusing on college transition/persistence/completion and career readiness
- Prepare and implement individual intervention plans for participants, including but not limited to academic skills assistance, tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance, and other resources to improve academic standing
- Provide advising services with a focus on persistence and completion, career readiness, academic and social integration, and transfer options
- Prepare participants to monitor their progress toward achieving educational, personal, and career goals
- Collaborate with the Lead Counselor in the development, facilitation, and delivery of programs/workshops
- Partner with College Counselors and on-campus advisors/stakeholders on student issues relating to performance and potential disqualifications to meet retention goals
- Work with College Counselors and other staff to assist in organizing and facilitating student workshops
- Analyze retention and attrition data to identify trends and potential solutions
- Generate standardized reports on participant progress and files
- Maintain regular and timely documentation of participant interactions with counselors, faculty, and family
- Research effective high school and college/university retention programs
- Provide direction to students for navigating academic and non-academic resources on campus, online, and in the community
- Conduct home visits to connect with low-contact participants
- Collaborate with Career Services to ensure participants are engaging in career-related opportunities
- Perform any additional duties as assigned

We offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range is $60,000 to $70,000.
